And Her Name Is…

chanukahday7.jpg
Seventh Day of Chanukah in Casa Avrech.

This morning in synagogue our granddaughter was blessed with a beautiful Hebrew name.

The naming ceremony is called Zeved Habat, the gift of a daughter. This custom has long been associated with Sephardic Jews, but is increasingly adopted by Ashkenazim.

We thank HaShem for the miracle of a new life, and pray that His Blessings will accompany her all the days of her life.

Here is the naming part of the ceremony, taken from the Koren Siddur, translation by Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks, Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth.

He who blessed our ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses and Aaron, David and Solomon, Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah. May He bless Offspring #2, daughter of Chasya, who has given birth.

And her newborn daughter, born in favor, whose name in Israel shall be called Lielle Meital daughter of Son-in-Law #1.

Bless, we pray to You, her parents that they may have the merit to raise her to the Torah, to the marriage canopy and to good deeds; and let us say: Amen.

LielleMaytal.jpg
Lielle Meital, pronounced Lee-ale May-tal. Lielle means G-d is Mine, and Meital means droplets of dew.

For us, it is a joy and a b’racha, a blessing, to share the naming of our beloved new granddaughter with all our readers. May we only share simchas together.

Comment Rules

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

  1. No profanity.
  2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

Mazel Tov! Lielle Meital is absolutely beautiful.
BTW, I watched a movie called “Yankles” this weekend…somewhat painful, considering the awfully bad payos, confused hassidic garb, confused Ashkenaz/Sefard Hebrew pronounciation…I would have worked for free to help them and avoid having my teeth put on edge. Is there someone in Hollywood that can help out poor movie producers like this? Is this something you do? Or should I try to move to Hollywood ;) ?

Congratulations to you and yours, Robert. I’m stunned by the beautiful imagery of ‘droplets of dew’.
Lovely channukah photos too. The mantel and ornament drip with class.

What a beautiful name. Not only is “Tal” a common name in Israel, combinations, such as Ravital (full of dew) and Ortal (light of dew) are common.

    Congratulations, Robert.
Notwithstanding such theological differences as we have, I find common ground in this. Mormon fathers also bless and name their newborns before their local congregation. There are no prescribed words for the blessing, but the thoughts that are usually expressed seem very similar.
And somehow a tradition has grown up of holding up the newborn for the whole congregation to see immediately after the blessing is complete, which usually draws a unison “awwwwwww” from the adults present.

Yes, I’d seen the name on FB, only moments after your daughter posted it this a.m. What a lovely, lyrical name!
Were you able to be there today?
    Mazel Tov again to everyone.

Love the name. Good choices. Very modern, lilting and spiritual, full of meaning in the context of Israel’s recent events. We who have Ashkenazi accents when we speak Hebrew will not mess up the names, such as happens when there is an “r” or “resh” sound.

Everyone should know that if not for you, Jackie, Seraphic Secret would not exist.
We are grateful for your friendship, and of course, for taking care of Offspring #2 when she and her friends were in Europe.

At the moment, and as you know this changes very quickly, Lielle Meital most looks like her aunt, Offspring #3. But as we say in Hollywood, it’s all in the lighting:-)
