But...well... uh...um...

Tom Cruise is spending a great deal of time and energy speaking out about his devotion to Katie Holmes (no problem) and Scientology (problem). And not necessarily in that order. In fact, his mouthing off about Scientology is proving a bit awkward for the studios. Recently, in an interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel, Cruise got into a heated exchange with the reporter who called Scientology a "pseudo science." Gosh, whatever gave him that idea?

Now this is the, um, interesting part: Steven Spielberg was present during this interview; star and director were supposed to be promoting their upcoming film, The War of the Worlds. And so, in order to try and salvage a quickly devolving situation, Spielberg stepped in and defended Tom's dedication to Scientology by comparing it to...

You know what's coming next, right? But you don't want to believe it because it's just so wrong. You want to close your eyes, plug up your ears, shake off the whole approaching train wreck and make believe that it's all a terrible dream. Believe me, I feel your pain.

Well, unfortunately, tragically, stupidly, unbelievably, but all too normal for Hollywood, Spielberg compared Cruise's devotion to Scientology to: his work for the Shoah Foundation.

Steven, Steven, where to begin? You're a great director, and your Shoah Foundation is a Kiddush Ha-Shem, a santification of G-d's name. But... well... uh... um...

Steven, baby, there' so much I want to say about your unfortunate comment, but, well, good Lord, I only have ten fingers, one keyboard, and... help, my brain is meltiiiiiing...

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

1. No profanity.

2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

WHAT!!!???? This tidbit missed my ears and eyes?

Unfortunately, my reaction has to resort to "Valley Girl speak": OH...MY...GAWD!

Steven, how could you? Your uttered defense is a kind of "chilul Hashem".

Robert, thanks for bringing this Hollywood moment to our attention.

Hi Robert, I wrote to you some months ago regarding how much your writings about Ariel had touched me. I have since kept up with your bloggings (which I love...don't always agree with, but love!). I just had to comment on your Tom Cruise entry...has this man lost his mind? He was recently seen jumping up and down on Oprah's couch professing his love for Katie Holmes, and telling Oprah he's never felt this way before about any woman (nice for the children he had with Nicole Kidman to hear). And did you know that he is not only an actor, but is now a psychiatrist. In a recent interview on that great, scholarly television show, "Access Hollywood", he told the interviewer that doctor's have no business prescribing anti-depressants to people with depression; that children should never be given medication for A.D.D.....that all of this could be taken care of with proper diet and vitamins. While I believe that our children are probably being over-medicated today as an easy answer, many children have greatly benefited and had their lives changed with medication. I would like to lock him in a room to face the millions of Americans who suffer from depression, OCD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia etc. whose lives have been transformed by chemical intervention. I hear that he recently fired his public relations person and hired his scientologist sister to take over this job. Obviously his old p.r. person was able to hold the reins on him, and his sister is letting him go! I watched Oprah and Speilberg kiss his "tuchas" on her show...these people will do and say anything for money and ratings. Hollywood...what a world!!!
Thanks for letting me rant. You continue to fill my heart with your writings.
Take care, Randi

Randi:

Thanks so much for your comment. And BTW, I do remember your last note to me. Good to hear from you again. As to TC's remarks about medication and psychiatry; these are the rock solid core beliefs of Scientologists. Hence, TC is but giving over their most basic philosophy. There is much scuttlebutt among Hollywood insiders about why Cruise, who is normally so press savvy, is suddenly acting out... so weirdly. I think the reason is really quite simple. At a certain point Hollywood superstars start believing that they are God-like, beyond criticism, beyond retribution. They believe that at last, they can reveal who they really are. Unfortunately who they really are is: vain, ignorant, self-absorbed, greedy, and thoroughly childish, with the emotional maturity of a pre-adolescent Valley Girl. Now, TC is deeply involved in Scientology. I believe that he is determined to make it an accepted "religion" in America. I think that he's overplaying his hand and if he continues in this manner, thereb will be a back lash, starting at the box office.

I visited the Church of Scientology's website to find out from the horses mouth what this Hollywood religion is all about. I'm not impressed whatsoever. So you need to meditate after living a life of sin & debauchery? Fine! Go get your high colonic and contemplate your belly button in the Amazon. But to make a religion out of it? After reading word after eye-rolling word of fake feel-good fluff (probably written by lawyers - feel good lawyers, now that is just wrong), I just could not understand how intelligent people could gravitate towards this. It's so self serving. Where are their doctrines of helping fellow man? Performing good deeds. This is how you get a clear head. And they call us Jews crazy.

Say what you will about this man's devotion to the Church of Scientology - his public display of ardor for Katie Holmes (sigh...) proves that he is no homosexual. Some things just can't be faked. And speaking of Scientology, guess which administration directed the IRS to throw in the towel and submit to their legal attacks? HINT: you'll find a Bush on either side of it.

I dunno...I live in a community where kids shave their heads and women have to wear wigs. I don't think we're in the best position to tell people their religion is kooky...

Posted by: psychotoddler at June 6, 2005 06:01 PM

why not? We've been called much worse things than kooky for much less kooky behavior (ie. breathing).
