Holocaust Cartoons

Moroccan wins Iran's "Hatred of Jews" cartoon contest

A Moroccan won first prize on Wednesday in Iran's International Holocaust Cartoons Contest, which had sparked outrage in Israel, the West and among Jewish groups. Iran's best-selling newspaper, Hamshahri, launched a competition in February to find the best cartoon about the Holocaust, in which 6 million Jews were killed by the Nazis.

Oh yeah, let's allow these people to develop nuclear weapons.

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

1. No profanity.

2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

I don't think that cartoon is the winner, it's a cartoon making fun of the contest. I don't know, maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?

In any case, the contest did not draw any outrage from ME - a Jewish grandchild of Holocaust survivors in Israel. Actually, my reaction has been decidedly one of "ho hum." What does the cartoon contest prove, exactly? That they are Anti-Semitic? We already knew that. They are childish and hypocritical? We already knew that. I don't see why this contest is a big deal. I wouldn't expect any more from Iran.

Robert, I think in your rush to post this story, you missed the point that your weblink does not take us to a page that illustrates the offending cartoon. This is evident when a description of Derkaoui's winning image is presented in the middle of the article.

Please note that the web page does in fact show an offensive cartoon, but not the actual image that your post otherwise suggests. Thanks.

I must have been caught by Seraphic Secret's "Comments" gremlins. I now see that Sarah mentioned the same thing I did regarding the cartoon reference. However, her comment wasn't originally there when my reply was prepared and submitted.

Sarah, Brian:

My mistake. No obviously that was not the "winning" cartoon.

Sarah:

I think we should take Iran's anti-Jewish hatred seriously for it impacts the Jews who live in Iran, still a sizable population, and obviously it has very serious implications for Israel. State-sponsored hatred should never be greeted with a ho-hum for it means that a whole generation of children are being brought up in an ideology dedicated to a genocidal Jew hatred.

Forgive me for cutting and pasting from my blog, but here is my two cents.

"Ahmadinejad is doing several things. He is testing the water. He wants to see what kind of reaction his actions receive. He is trying to establish new facts that he can use to try to demonize and dehumanize Israel with.

Don't take this man for a complete fool and don't be fooled into thinking that he is full of bluster. He means what he says. He is very dangerous."

Jack:

Agree with you completely. I get upset when people label Ahmadinejad a fool or a madman. That's what they did with Hitler. Iran and her government are a real threat to Israel, to America, to Sunni Muslims. Iran's nuclear threat is serious and not seeing this is stupid and dangerous.

BTW, that is the policy being pushed by the NY Times, see recent articles by Noah Feldman, Ted Koppel, and their resident Mid East genius Thomas Friedman. All agree that we have to "learn to live with the Iranian bomb."

I really wonder about them.

Jack:

I not only wonder about them, I also know with every fibre of my being that they are a danger to civilization for they enable evil at every single turn.
