Democrats Against Victory

In Tuesday’s State of the Union address, the President’s calls for victory in Iraq were met from the Democrat side of the aisle with intentional silence. Most Democrats would not applaud, much less stand, for victory in Iraq. Over the past months and years, those on the left have gone to great effort to paint the mission in Iraq as “failed,” “doomed” and a “disaster.” They have failed to acknowledge the accomplishments of the U.S. military in Iraq, but have been quick to talk about those in our armed forces as child victims of a failed policy or (worse) as bloodthirsty thugs engaging in torture and terror.

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

1. No profanity.

2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

In all seriousness the question is: "What is Victory?" Neither party has made it clear what we're exactly trying to do in Iraq before we can move on. Some say we can declare victory now that Saddam is dead and Iraq has a government. Others say we need to see some kind of stability first, but just how much is not clear.

Iraq would almost surely descend into total chaos if we pulled out now. I honestly don't know how we could be sure it wouldn't even 10-20 years from now.

Perhaps we shouldn't be so worried about victory in Iraq and move on to Iran and Syria who seem to be causing a lot of the trouble in Iraq right now anyway.

Jake:

Victory is when a political process can move along and not be hindred by the threat of violence.

Victory is when children can go to school and not be blown up on the way.

Victory is when contracts are honored.

Victory is when men and women are able to participate in the business of free markets.

Victory is when women are not treated like cattle.

Victory is when basic social sevices are extended to all citizens.

Victory is when a state is not at the mercy of armed clans and armed tribes.

Victory is when a handful of nihilistic Islamic homicide bombers do not dictate the political agenda of freedom loving world powers.

Then we truly have a while to go. I'm not saying I'm against waiting, but the American people need to be told this message very clearly and given some more specifics. No one in power seems to be willing to do that.
