Jane: On Those Who Are Against Marriage

"I pay very little regard... to what any young person says on the subject of marriage. If they profess a disinclination for it, I only set it down that they have not seen the right person."

--Jane Austen, Mansfield Park

This should be fun. Take the Jane Austen Heroine's Quiz and discover which main character you most resemble. Will you be Marianne Dashwood? Lizzy Bennet? Fanny Price? Or perhaps Anne Elliot? Let us know in the comments section, okay?

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

1. No profanity.

2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

C A T H E R I N E ::

"You are Catherine Morland of Northanger Abbey! You love a good Gothic romance - so much, in fact, that you'll fool yourself into thinking you're living one! You are imaginative and naive, which is at once endearing and perplexing. perhaps your heart is TOO pure...but it is adventurous. After all, you love a trip to Bath or a stay at an ancient Abbey."

Okay, Robert...so is this good?

Pearl:

This is scary accurate! Sheesh, saves money on therapy.

I am Marianne Dashwood! That was so fun!

Joannah:

Is that what you would have guessed about yourself?

Posted by: Robert J. Avrech [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2007 04:39 PM

In your suggestions above -- Will you be...? -- I read Fanny Price as Fanny Brice. I know what Fanny Brice was all about, but not Ms. Price. Were those two anything alike in character?

Posted by: Pearl at January 29, 2007 05:31 PM

Pearl:

They could no be more different. Fanny Price considers theatre quite wicked.

No, not at all! I would have expected to be an Elizabeth Barrett type. Guess I don't know myself as well as I think I do... ;-)

all women think they're like Lizzy Bennet - apparently including Keira Knightly who played her in the movie

Great quiz! I'm Elinor Dashwood.

Posted by: Tamara at January 30, 2007 04:35 AM

"You are Marianne Dashwood of Sense & Sensibility! You are impulsive, romantic, impatient, and perhaps a little to vocal in your honesty. You enjoy romantic poetry and novels, and play the pianoforte beautifully. To boot, your singing voice is captivating. You feel deeply, and love passionately." Interesting....

Mata Hari:

So, who did you turn out to be?

Posted by: Robert J. Avrech [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 30, 2007 08:30 AM

Tamara, Melissa:

Look at that, you are sisters.

Posted by: Robert J. Avrech [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 30, 2007 08:31 AM

The test says I'm Elinor Dashwood, but I'm really more like Elizabeth Bennet (didn't I say everyone feels that way?)

Mata Hari:

Another Dashwood sister. But deep down, really Lizzy. Gotcha.

I got about halfway through the questions before giving up. I decided you simply can't meaningfully map a male personality onto female categories. But then that probably should have been obvious.

Is there a quiz for JA heroes? Or is "JA heroes" an oxymoron? Hate to say this, but I've only read one Jane Austen novel, in high school, because I had to, and I didn't care for it.

Hey Pearl, we're soul sisters - I'm also "Catherine Moreland." But I don't know - I've got a pretty intellectual and reasonable side, I think. Maybe I'm a cross between Catherine and the much-coveted designation of Elizabeth Bennett. What do you think, Robert?

Posted by: Sara at January 30, 2007 11:55 AM

Kent:

I have not seen a test for Austen heroes. And no, not an oxymoron. Glad to see that your new site is up. Looks magnificent. Have to set aside lots of time to explore it.

Sara:

These tests do not do well cross-pollinating personalities. They are an either/or business--which makes them either fun or infuriating. What do I think, I think you're a bit of Lizzie, but not as much as you would like. Who is save the fictional Lizzie?
