Shmatte Chic: The Rise of Jewish Fashion

At Fashion Week in New York last month, Brazilian designer Alexandre Herchcovitch didn't so much unveil a collection as veil one. His aggressively modest looks included below-the-knee skirts, billowing silhouettes, and, most conspicuously, hats. Lots of elaborate, distinctly undainty hats, which bore a striking resemblance to, of all things, those worn by fashionable Orthodox Jewish women on holy days—making Herchcovitch's runway seem less like a Saturday at the Shows than Sabbath in certain synagogues. This followed on the heels of his summer 2007 men's collection show, in which models were draped in oversized Star of David necklaces, and more than a few others dressed in pants and belts that plainly recalled zizit, the ritual fringes worn by Orthodox Jewish men.

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

1. No profanity.

2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

Fabulous, I love it!

Ah, it mentions Matisyahu - that man can beatbox like a machine. (He performed at my alma mater, so we got to see him live. The effect is, to say the least, unexpected.)

Rob, glanced your earlier article about Abdullard the Hashemite, and it made me think of an article I read today. Not sure if you've seen it:

http://www.theaugeanstables.com/reflections-from-second-draft/game-theory-and-social-emotions/

He loves (like his Mozzle buddies) to babble on about Palestine and the injustice of it and etc, etc, etc zzz. The above article does a good job of articulating one of the key connections (philosophically) between Islamism and Leftism.

Matisyahu is quite unexpected, and that is a good thing. Thanks for the link to the always excellent Augean Stables. Excellent.

Re: The Shmatte Chic article. This article brings to mind a statement supposedly made by Rabbi Yoel Teitlebaum, the first post-war Satmar Rov. When his congregants told him that their wives were complaining about their "Tzinius" mode of dress during the the hot summer weather, he told them, "If this style were the latest fashion, your wives would rush to purchase these clothing!" Let's see if his words were prophetic. :-]
