Columbia U: "Sure, We'd Invite Hitler."
Columbia University, where Nazis and Islamo Nazis are always welcome.
You think I'm being, er, facetious?
And Jewish parents, don't forget to send in your massive tuition checks to Columbia University. It's vital that you continue to pay the salaries of these, um, educators. Because y' know, if your kids don't go to Columbia, chas v'shalom, they might end up at Yeshiva University.
Hat Tip: Weasel Zippers.
Just to set the record straight for these enlightened ivy leaguers.
1. Jihadists have a specific goal when they speak in Western venues. It is to show the home team that they have power and legitimacy in the west. It is to demonstrate the inevitable rise of Islam and the decadence of the west.
2. The Arab/Muslim world views our freedom of speech as a fatal weakness.
3. On television, the Muslim world never sees any debate—there never is. They never hear any tough questions—and there won't be. They only see what the government wants them to see: a nifty photo-op of their glorious leader taking the west by storm, and being treated with great respect. Which counts for everything in the Muslim world.
4. By inviting the Iranian tyrant to speak Columbia University puts the stamp of legitimacy on a regime that is one of the most repressive on earth. This is a regime that denies the Holocaust, a regime that threatens genocide to Israel—please don't tell me it's a bad translation. The Nazis at the Wannsee Conference never used the words murder or kill when they were talking about the Jews of Eastern Europe either. This willful obtuseness with language by the chattering classes on the left is a form of Jew-hatred the world should no longer tolerate. It's disgusting.
5. The Iranian regime declared war on America and they have been killing Americans ever since. Inviting a man who orders the killing of Americans on a daily basis excuses these murders past, present and future. Has Columbia University never heard of the massacre at the Khobar Towers? Oh wait, they probably have heard of that atrocity, but they don't care. This is a university that bans the ROTC from campus because of the "Don't ask, don't tell policy." Of course, this Soviet-style ban immediately revokes any freedom of action on the part of adult gays who might just want to serve their country. But y'know, the tyrants on the left know better.
6. The Iranians are also responsible for the slaughter of 85 Argentinian Jews in 1994. Does this state sponsored terrorism resonate with Columbia University? Are they going to sit down with this smiling butcher and discuss it with him?
7. No, they will not.
8. Of course the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis of over 400 days is ancient history to the academics at Columbia University and the Iranian tyrant who took part in this crime. He was just a student, right? Like the Columbia students in the 60's. Good times.
9. Let's face it, Columbia University is filled with, in Lenin's words, useful idiots. The Iranian tyrant will smile and blather on about "justice." No one in the room will understand that he's actually talking about Islamic justice, which means publicly hanging accused homosexuals, or stoning women to death who are suspected of adultery. People will say, “What's the harm in inviting him to speak, the Republic can take it. Grow up.”
10. But these people are jihadist deniers. These people have not a clue about how this visit plays in the Muslim world. These people do not understand propaganda and how it inflames jihad.
11. They do not understand that invitation to speak at Columbia University is a vital step forward in jihad, another step in our dhimmitude.
12. How are the Dems responding? Check out the progressive Jew-hating kids at the Daily Kos. A Jewish lesbian has a crush on Mahmoud, because he's like all cute and cuddly and most important, he speaks out about the "horrors of the Bush administration." Via: Little Green Footballs.
In the preface to his great history of Rome, Livy explains his motive in writing this monumental work:
...to trace the progress of our moral decline, to watch, first, the sinking of the foundations of morality as the old teaching was allowed to lapse, then the rapidly increasing disintegration, then the final collapse of the whole edifice, and the dark dawning of our modern day when we can neither endure our vices nor face the remedies needed to cure them.

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.
1. No profanity.2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism. That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.
First, this little weasel is even allowed to speak to the UN after threatening the destruction of another member state - oh, the state was only Israel, so it is OK.
Second, he has the unmitigated gall to ask to visit Ground Zero (which he would descerate by his mere presence).
Now there is the myopic and ridiculous decision of the self-important fools in the Ivory Tower of Columbia to let this chalaria speak to their staff and students - some of the same people who literally chased the Minuteman guy from the stage recently, and who will probably give the little SOB a standing ovation as somehow being the champion of the nations oppressed by the USA/Israel conspiracy .
One needs to administer more than smelling salts to these fools - perhaps a slap on the head with a 2 by 4 would help (probably not, so repeat as necessary).
YIKES!!!!!
To all of Robert's Jewish readers - Gmar chatimah tovah, and to all others, be well!

Not surprising but so telling is that Tehran is very unhappy with the treatment they are receiving by the U.S. with regard to Ahmadinejad's visit.

Reading others blogs about this issue I am honestly surprised that people are agreeing with Columbia and bashing everyone who is against it. Columbia would never have a grand wizard (or whatever they're called) from the KKK who was killing African Americans by the thousands and funding the killing of American soldiers. Who's next Osama Bin Laden? "Well he hates us & orchestrated the killing of thousands of Americans but we're going ask him tough questions" Come on!

In the novel "That Hideous Strength," by C S Lewis, the principal character is captured by a sinister cabal. He is put through a process of training which is aimed at killing "all specifically human reactions" in a person.
It strikes me that killing the "specifically human reactions" in a person is often the effect of higher education as practiced today--especially graduate education and particularly in the humanities. See my post An Incident at the Movies.

Dear Robert,
As my friend Rabbi Louis likes to say: "sickitating!"
My first thought is that the United States Secret Service that'll be protecting this so-called "head of state" should be lax-JUST THIS ONCE" in its otherwise laudatory efforts to protect our nation's executive officials and/or drop this miscreant weasel off in West Rogers Park on Chicago's north side:just give us a "heads up!"
As for the UN, if it can allow a pistol packin' arafat years back to speak before the GA, then of course it makes perfect sense to allow "President #$%^&^%$#* "his rightful forum."
Sickitating!
As for Ground Zero, praise the Lord that the NYPD has enough sechel to deny his request for protection, but it is genuinely disgusting that that cretinous nazi wannabe will be laughing and smirking all the way back to teheran should this country allow him to visit Ground Zero!
The combination of our failed efforts to fund and back our troops adequately together with the current liberal bilge re: columbia university and the controversy about Ground 0 ... is at least equaled or perhaps exceeded in its mind-boggling stupidity by the Israeli Government's penchant for releasing terrorists from prison!
What IS wrong with that picture?

I also think Scott Johnson at Powerline gets it,
"Columbia's prattle about free speech may be a tale told by an idiot, but it signifies something. And President Bollinger is a fool who is not excused from the dishonor he brings to his institution and his fellow citizens by the fact that he doesn't know what he is doing."
http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2007/09/018510.php
And, Roger Kimball also makes some crucial points in his article, Columbia & the Poverty of Liberalism at
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2007/09/columbia_the_poverty_of_libera.html
I particularly like this quote from Walter Bagehot which he references.
"History is strewn with the wrecks of nations which have gained a little progressiveness at the cost of a great deal of hard manliness, and have thus prepared themselves for destruction as soon as the movements of the world gave a chance for it."

I ate dinner last night with a good friend- a gay man- who is very active in liberal politics and PFLAG. He found it disgusting that the Iranian president is invited to speak at Columbia. In fact all five of my gay friends at the table thought it was disgusting that he wanted to visit Ground Zero too. We had an interesting discussion about how moral relativism and activism are at their core contradictory. It made me feel hopeful.

Columbia University claims they are America’s best and brightest?
Did you see the way they applauded Ahmadenijad?
They are just a bunch of filthy Little Eichmanns.
Too bad that Cho Seung-hui didn’t go to Columbia University!

Steve:
Columbia U. should change its name to Jihad U.
Disgraceful.
But not surprising from the freedom-loving folks who would not let The Minutemen speak.
