Google Earth Used to Target Israel
Google, whose motto is: Do no evil.
Well, it seems to Seraphic Secret that aiding terrorists in their murderous work qualifies as evil incarnate. It should be quite easy for the clever software engineers at Google to block out the Israeli portions of their Earth Maps.
Palestinian militants are using Google Earth to help plan their attacks on the Israeli military and other targets, the Guardian has learned.
Members of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, a group aligned with the Fatah political party, say they use the popular internet mapping tool to help determine their targets for rocket strikes.
"We obtain the details from Google Earth and check them against our maps of the city centre and sensitive areas," Khaled Jaabari, the group's commander in Gaza who is known as Abu Walid, told the Guardian.
Abu Walid showed the Guardian an aerial image of the Israeli town of Sderot on his computer to demonstrate how his group searches for targets.
The Guardian filmed an al-Aqsa test rocket launch, fired into an uninhabited area of the Negev desert, last month. Despite the crudeness of the weapons, many have landed in Sderot, killing around a dozen people in the last three years and wounding scores more.

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.
1. No profanity.2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism. That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.
I am furious with Google Earth for a different reason regarding Israel. The last time I checked, a single person or entity had been using the map to cover it with circles that pop up to recite so-called facts about the fleeing of Palestinian refugees in 1948 and which link to a site listing supposed statistics about Arab villages that no longer exist. I don't know if these pop-ups still exist today and I would hope that somehow they were taken off. Also, most, if not all, Jewish towns in the West Bank are not named, but the tiniest of Arab towns are. Generally, I think that Google has a ridiculous policy that allows individuals to mar the geographic map simply because they want the world to view their stupid photos. Google Earth has lost its compass.

This is the same Google Earth service that has the Jerusalem neighborhood of Gilo labelled as an illegal settlement, in addition to numerous other "errors." I think it's time I stopped making use of Google's services. Aiding terrorists is simply unacceptable in my world.

So, Google should block a entire part of the world for, i'm sorry, what reason? What about Spain, Ireland, Colombia,Venezuela, Russia, Lebanon,Congo, The Philippines, large etc...
No point in Google Earth then...

Sorry for the use of The Word, i usually respect religious differences.
On google, really, if palestinian militants use Google Earth to search for targets, then that's just sad, it doesn't mean google is out there in another anti-jew conspiracy. But i guess your heard that all before, right?
Best wishes

Miguel:
1. The Arabs are not militants. They are terrorists for they target civilians on purpose, and then hide among civilians.
2. It's not sad, it's an atrocity.
3. Google can block these maps and, in fact, Seraphic Secret has learned that Google executives are now in talks with IDF personnel.
4. No other terrorist organizations are known to use Google maps as targeting aids, that's what makes this situation unique and particularly horrific.
5. Google certainly does not want to set a precedent as the partner of Hamas terrorists, who proclaim in their official charter the goal of annihilating Israel and every Jew on the face of the earth.
6. We never for a moment believed that Google is involved in some kind of anti-Jewish conspiracy. They are just a vast multi-national corporation who are, like all multi-nationals, looking to protect their bottom line. This leads to some truly stupid and flat-footed responses.

Funny that Google can restrict their software for the Chinese government and limit free speech, but are uninterested in limiting access to their system to protect the lives of Israeli citizens.

China is a big market, whose leaders theatened to block Google's entry there. Israel's not. It's the bottom line.
Page and Brin had a hard time justifying their China policy in light of the "Do no evil" mantra. They rationalized that this way they can at least do some good, or something to that effect. The bottom line.

When you think about it, the Do No Evil motto is ridiculous. I mean, isn't that setting the bar kind of low? Most decent human beings aren't satisfied with just doing no evil; they'd like to do as much good as they can.
In Yiddish there's an expression, used when damning someone with faint praise: Nu, ehr hargit nisht kein menschen. (Well, he doesn't kill people.) That's pretty much the Google motto.

It's 4am here in Portugal, i don't have an answer for what you said right now so i wont make one right now. Of course what you said makes sense, I'll give it a thought.
Good evening to you all.

There are a lot of reasons to distrust and worry about Google. This one is particularly egregious. I hope the IDF persuades Brin and Page to do the right thing.

Google's two founders and chief executives are Jews... sometimes that doesn't help when it comes to protecting Israel, but I can be optimistic for now since I hear they are in talks with the IDF.

Mind if I point out that if terrorists could use Google to target Israel, Israel could do the same with terrorist countries? It's pretty much equal opportunity information out there.
While Israel may prize security, it's kinda tough to find your way around it if you don't have a map, and I suspect most of the folks involved would be TOURISTS not TERRORISTS.

Ricky:
Israel does not need Google to target her terrorist enemies. She has her own satellites and drones for detailed fly-overs.
Equal opportunity information, as you call it, is much like free speech. There are limits. Israel is fighting an asymmetrical war. Israel does all she can to limit civilian casualties, while the terrorist's goal is to kill as many innocent men, women and children as possible plus the "...obliteration of the Zionist entity." This quote directly from the Hamas charter.
Google have another problem and it is legal. The residents of S'derot, under constant missile attack (since Gaza became Judenrein two years ago) by terrorists who have told them to "flee or die," can now sue Google for liability.
Finally, tourists in Israel found their way around the country way before Google existed. Israel is a technologically advanced country that, get this, can generate its own secure digital maps of the country.
