I'm on Strike

This just showed up in my mailbox.

The WGAW Board and WGAE Council have unanimously approved a strike, based upon the unanimous recommendation of the WGA Negotiating Committee. The strike will begin at 12:01 AM Monday, November 5, 2007. Note: Picketing and other strike support assignments will be finalized and communicated over the weekend. All WGAW members should monitor the www.wga.org website for more information.

The last strike writer's was in 1988; it was long and bitter. I have a feeling this one is going to be even worse. The writers and the studios are very far apart on any kind of agreement. New media means lots and lots of money and the Writer's Guild is not about to give away what could be golden residuals.

Karen and I wish all our friends a lovely and meaningful Shabbat.

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

1. No profanity.

2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

1. Will you be on a picket line?
2. Does this mean you can't blog?
3. Just kidding about #2.

Ralphie:

I'll probably be blogging more than ever. G-d help you.

They won't allow me on the picket line, I'm far too well known as a Conservative. The other writers might just attack yours truly as a running dog of capitalism.

Woof-woof.

well Robert...if you're going to be blogging more, perhaps a little more "robert loves karen" would be in order.

A writer on strike,
Is likely to see a spike,
In time spent online.

Glad I give you hope. I wish I could give you a short strike. I fear it's going to be long and bitter. Keep in touch.

Saving the new chapters for the book:)

Kishke:

Wow, you're all Talmudic/Haiku. A new phase. Yasher Koach.

Pearl:

Oh boy, you are ambitious for me. I'm exhausted just reading your list. Can't I just, y'know, sit back and watch Karen breathe?

And then go to the shooting range.

Talmud and haiku.
Both teach importance of words.
Not a word wasted.

You are on a roll.

I've been so extremely unhappy with what's coming out of Hollywood lately that I've been rather enthusiastic about the strike. I have this rather faint hope that it will force something of a rejiggering of attitudes out there -- or, at least, that it will give Americans a break, both from the relentless anti-Americanism that is Hollywood, and from the sleazy fare so often fed to our children.

Having said that, I'm deeply sorry that the strike will affect those who have managed to keep their balance and their values in the Hollywood community, and who have contributed quality writing and ideas to the world outside Hollywood. I hope that you weather the strike well and that, when you come out on the other side, your career prospects are more exciting than ever.

Incidentally, I know of one man who took advantage of the 1988 writer's strike to embark on a new career that left him happier and more fulfilled than he ever was when working in Hollywood. Sometimes events like this help us make decisions we've been avoiding. He needed to recognize that the work he was doing down there left him very unhappy. The wife he subsequently acquired (that would be me) and the two kids help the happiness factor too.

Bookworm:

Thanks so much for your articulate and highly informative comment.

I too, as you know, have been distressed and perturbed by Hollywood's hate mail to America via celluloid. They call it patriotism. To me that's like calling wife-beating a form of love.

I have no hope that this strike, nor the string of box office flops of these anti-American films will make a bit of difference in Hollywood attitudes. The left are set, like Stalinists, in their path, and I see nothing in the future that can pry them from their jihadist-enabling positions. It is 1938 and Hollywood has not a clue.
