New York Times Sinking

Graphic courtesy of Wolf Howling
When New York Times editor David Shipley rejected Senator McCain's Op-Ed piece on Iraq, the blogosphere reacted with outrage.
How dare the New York Times publish Barack Obama's essay on Iraq and not give equal time to presidential opponent John McCain?
Duh.
I mean, come on, in what universe is The New York Times considered an objective newspaper?
In what universe is the New York Times not considered a hard left journal?
The New York Times does not hesitate to publish propaganda from Hamas on their Op-Ed page for crying out loud.
Personally, I'm delighted that Shipley, a former speechwriter for President Clinton, and the New York Times so flagrantly tipped their hand.
This outrageously biased and truly foolish action has handed McCain far more attention than any Op-Ed he would have published.
The NYT has disgraced itself, acting with all the dopey immaturity of a high school newspaper.
No wonder management recently laid off two-hundred NYT employees.
No wonder publisher Arthur Sulzberger, Jr. refuses to give interviews to the media, unless questions are vetted in advance.
The dinosaur media is dying, through shrinking advertising revenues and subscriptions ebbing away at an astonishing rate. Editors and writers only compound the problem with coverage so biased, so irresponsible that, excepting true liberal believers, most consumers understand that half of what they read is not true and the other half is lies.
It's a fascinating and entertaining spectacle: deliberate corporate suicide.
And the breathless, uncritical coverage of Barack Obama only punctuates the dinosaur media's herd mentality and hard left bias.
It's funny, Seraphic Secret is a tiny blog in a huge blogosphere, but our readership grows day by day. I believe It's got something to do with honesty. When you drop in on Seraphic Secret you know what you're getting. We are observant Jews, religious Zionists, loyal American citizens who vote Republican, gun-owners, movie-lovers, devoted parents and grandparents, and we proudly proclaim our various biases.
For instance: The Seven Samurai is the greatest movie—evuh!
We do not pretend to be impartial journalists, as if such a thing is even possible. We don't even pretend to be journalists.
In contrast, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, all claim to be staffed by objective journalists who serve and inform the public.
And so, it's not a shock that those papers are dying.
No one trusts a clumsy liar.
New York Times Co. says its second-quarter earnings fell 82 percent from the year-ago quarter boosted by a one-time gain. Meanwhile, print advertising revenue continued to shrink. The New York-based newspaper publisher says its quarterly net income dropped to $21.1 million, or 15 cents per share, which included 11 cents per share in buyout costs.
Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected income of 22 cents per share in the latest quarter. Analyst estimates typically exclude special items.
Revenue dropped 6 percent to $741.9 million, missing the average Wall Street estimate for $754 million. Ad revenue slipped down 11 percent, hurt mostly by fewer classified ads.
Chief Executive Janet Robinson says business was hurt by the “U.S. economic slowdown and secular forces playing out across the media.”

And for an hilarious comment on the dinosaur media's love affair with Obama let's go to the video.

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.
1. No profanity.2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism. That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

here is an interesting quote,
from the NYT site itself,
about the guidelines the NYT staff are expected to adhere to:
http://www.nytco.com/press/ethics.html#voting
about as true as its motto about
'All the news that's fit to print'
maybee time for a takeover by HaModia ;-)

Seraphic reader Elizabeth was unable to post her comment due to technical difficulties. She e-mailed us her comment and asked us to put it up.
Karen and Robert,
I wanted to thank you for your post and links on Shabbat rest as well as the Fast of the 17th of Tammuz. I reflected on the thought that Shabbat rest was the whole meaning of the Law. The L-rd our G-d declares that we are to struggle to enter His rest. When that occurs the divine power is unleashed. Is not this the story of both ancient and modern Israel? In every war of annihilation, where the odds against little Israel were fantastic, even the enemies of Israel were forced to acknowledge the presence of the divine power. Documented reports of warrior angels were made in all five recent wars.
Does anyone remember the title of the play by Eli Wiesel about an old rabbi and his sons (I think set in Eastern Europe)? I saw it when I was young and it greatly influenced me. The village is going to be destroyed and the sons are fomenting. The old Papa seems effete and defeated as he counsels and debates with his sons. But in the end we know somehow that Papa is right. I thought of this play as I reflected that all power of heaven will be fully brought to bear on this earth only when we enter G-d's rest.
On the NYT:
I can't remember exactly when the NYT started its downward slide but I think its been 20 years. In short, far before its current and deplorable implosion from paper of record to political rag, I began noting sloppy errors, decried the science section went it went from positively tutorial to positively mundane, and grieved when they cut the last page (and guilty pleasure) of the book review "Noted with Pleasure". I've been yelling at that paper, forecasting its doom ever since. So now whose passing have we'noted with pleasure'?
Thanks you for your website!

The NYT does have one advantage over most other papers. What they are really selling is not information, or even opinion, but prestige. Among a certain set of people, being a NYT reader signals "he is one of us." And there are at least several million of these snobs in the country.
The NYT has greatly harmed itself through its political bias and its lack of strategic business vision, in addition to the industry-wide factors that are affecting it. But as long as a certain kind of snob continues to exist in America, the paper will probably remain with us in some form.

Exdem:
Thanks so much for the link. The NYT guidelines are very funny when you consider that the paper is, essentially working for the Obama campaign, and every single Jerusalem correspondent is a mouthpiece for Arab terrorists.

Thanks so much for the kind and inspirational words. We're glad that our posts are enlightening.
Sorry, don't recall the play. But I never go to the theater. No close-ups or car chases.

David:
It's true that the NYT is a brand name, much like any useless fashion accessory. And it will be around for the foreseeable future. But I have a feeling that the paper will, under stockholder pressure, turn into something quite different than the present leftist propaganda rag.

A very good post. My only quibble is that the NYT's problem - and indeed, what seems the fundamental problem of the modern left - is that they have jettisoned intellectual honesty. It is one thing to have a biased outlook, it is quite another to allow that bias to trump reality. I can fully respect a Lieberman and I still think D.P. Moynihan was one of the best Senators we ever had - even though he was pretty liberal and sometimes deeply naive.
And I agree completely on Seven Samurai. Are you a fan of Shogun, also?

No votes for Kurosawa's Jojimbo? A fascinating parable on the true warrior versus the samurai. And it's hysterical! A must see for those of us living in cruel and dangerous times. Sorry there are no car chases, Robert, but some great close-ups of the amazing, stunning genius, Toshiro Mifune!

GW:
You are quite right about the intellectual dishonesty, rampant at the NYT and other left-leaning media outlets.
Glad to hear you also admire Seven Samurai. It's a great manual on how to fight terrorism.
I do like Shogun. Sorta.
It created a huge rift between Akira Kurosawa and Toshiru Mifune. Kurosawa thought it was junk, beneath Mifune's dignity. Mifune just wanted to cash his big, fat American check—forget about dignity and art.
They argued bitterly, and ultimately did not speak for years. It was a sad and tragic episode in one of the great friendships and professional collaborations in movie history.

I like Yojimbo too. Though for me it rates below Seven Samurai, Rashomon, and The Hidden Fortress.

Well, you're right, the fawning over an empty suit is not funny when one considers the possible consequences of an Obama kingship. Whoops, I mean presidency.
Whatever was I thinking?
Nevertheless, there is something truly funny at the sight of so many liberals marinating in a Maoist style cult of personality. It just shows that most liberals are just socialists in disguise.
