Montage: Old City, Jerusalem, Part I

Karen and I were led on a tour the old City of Jerusalem by the amazing and articulate Daniel Luria of Ateret Cohanim. If you've never taken an Ateret Cohanim tour, well, you have missed one of the the most important experiences in all Israel.

Just the day before, Daniel Luria led Governor Mike Huckabee on the same tour.

Our cousins Shani and her husband Assemblyman Dov Hikind arranged and accompanied Mike Huckabee on his tour of Old Jerusalem and S'derot. Shani and Dov were kind enough to arrange for our tour.

A few random photos from the Old City.

I like doorways.

This doorway looks like a Barnett Newman stripe painting.

Our guide was baffled by my focus on brightly colored doorways.

Notice that the color of the Nun's habits match the Jerusalem stone.

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

1. No profanity.

2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

A modern art reference? Color me surprised.

Nice pictures.

Alice:

I like modern art. I also like Vermeer and Rembrandt. I studied art history in college.

Glad you like my snapshots.

As the great modern painter Frank Stella says: “What you see is what you see.”

Rothko is one of my favorites.

The hijab on the far left looks like something out of a comic book, with a slightly feline flavor.

I just discovered your blog a few days ago and have been reading all the entries I've had time to get my hands on. Last night, I read The Hebrew Kid and the Apache Maiden in one sitting, staying up way past my bedtime, but I couldn't stop in the middle. It was way too good. Thank you for teaching me about Victorio and Lozen. They never taught us about them in school!

I haven't seen Body Double -- I am years if not decades behind on my movie-viewing -- but I saw A Stranger among Us at my friend's urging some years ago. It made a deep impression on me.

Did you have a chance to visit the Kotel Tunnels?

At any rate, you just got yourself another reader.

Hey! I see my favorite T-shirt!

Alice:

Rothko was a wonderful artist. His suicide, tragic.

Rahel:

Thanks so much for the kind and generous comment. I'm glad you enjoyed my novel.

I saw you at the bloggers conference.

You have a wonderful blog.

Dr. Carol:

Yup, I saw the Israel is Behind You t-shirt and immediately thought of you.

Rahel:

Forgot to mention that we did not have time to do the tunnel tour. But I saw your fine photo essay. Next time we'll definitely do it.

As for the feline headscarf, um, never occurred to me, but with all the cat portraits on your blog... I guess you're the expert.

Through the green doors is Har Habayit isn't it?

Did they point out that the (former) Mufti of Jerusalem bought the property right across from the Kotel Hakatan in 2000. Funny, but that provocative move did not result in massive rioting!

Did they first show you the before and after pictures of the Old City under Jordanian occupation? Those should be put online.

I wonder how the shopkeeper deals with changing the khimars in that display. Do his female relations handle it? Is it an offense against Islamic law for a man to look on the unveiled head of a female mannequin to whom he is not married? ;-)

We did the Ateret Kohanim tour several times, the last one being over Pesach. I am always in awe of the Jews choosing to live in the Arab quarter. They do not see it as a sacrifice to live there, they view it as a privilidge. And we were told there is a waiting list to live there. It's because of these Jews that that part of the old city is not "Judenrein".
