New Mac, New Soul

apple-black.jpg

Two weeks ago I bought a new computer—a Mac, natch. A sleek, black number with a "13 inch screen, 2 GB of memory and a 2.4 Ghz Intel Core Duo.

I'm a happy puppy.

Happier still because I got a free i-Pod touch with my computer, and let me tell you, this little baby is like Star Trek fun.

I'm all: “Beam me up, Scotty.”

Anyhoo.

Let's go to Israeli singer Yael Naim for some familiar tra-la-la.

But no dancing. It's the Nine Days

FBI Warning: If you are extremely frum the following video might be disturbing as it contains kol isha. Do not hit the play button if such sounds and images agitate your hashkafah.

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

1. No profanity.

2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

Showoff!
just kidding, just kidding.
She's an Israeli singer?! Where's the hebrew? The accent?

Mata Hari:

Not showing off, (well, maybe a little) just hoping to give Apple stock a boost with my oh-so-valuable endorsement.

If you listen closely you can hear Naim's distinctive Israeli accent.

I normally don't listen to music in the 9 days, but I was curious. I really like it. It's from the Apple commerical, right? You're too funny.

Posted by: mata hari at August 5, 2008 04:57 PM

Mata Hari:

Yup, Apple commercial, one of the most successful advertising campaigns in history.

We will keep your secret, that's why we're called Seraphic Secret.

I'll bet this whole blog is actually a cleverly concealed ad for Apple. Ingenious.

I digress, but imagine Jane Austen with a blog.

Posted by: mata hari at August 5, 2008 05:48 PM

I must ask, Robert. Do you still use paper/pen for any type of writing? Middle-of-the-night script or blog brainstorms, for instance?

And another question...and I'm truly hoping the answer is no...Are you one of these two-finger typists?

Posted by: Pearl at August 5, 2008 06:06 PM

Without doubt Apple makes the superior computer; and hands down the better operating system.

Unfortunately, most futures trading software is written for Windows.

However, in the user forum for Tradestation, the charting package I use, some are migrating over to Apple, since it is capable of running Windows.

It is something I am going to look into when it is time for me to upgrade my trading station.

And speaking of the nine days....
I will be really happy once Tisha B'Av comes and goes....
I need a good steak. ;)

Your post, the exchange following and the music - all reasons why your blog is such an enjoyable read. Bravo!

Jane Austen blog = Literary heaven.

I have post-it notes stuck all over my desk, they are breeding like tribbles.

Sadly, yes, two-fingered typing. I've worked out my own brilliant method. It's not pretty but it gets the scripts written.

Lance:

I think that in the next few years more and more software will be written for the OSX platform. Vista ia a huge bust and people are catching on to the stability of the Apple system

If you watch The Last Lecture, and I really hope you do, Professor Pauch says that one of his revelations is Mac computers.

Great life advice. Tremendous mussar.

Thanks so much for the kind words. As Orson Welles used to say at the close of his legendary Mercury Theater Broadcasts: “I am your obedient servant.”

" ... I think that in the next few years more and more software will be written for the OSX platform. Vista ia a huge bust and people are catching on to the stability of the Apple system ... "

my geek sensibilities are deeply offended ;-))

[rant]

while i hate 'vista' and installed xp pro instead,

the reason why apple is "stable",
is that they deceptively 'cheat',
(and squeeze/extort money out of unsuspecting users):

they offer only the computer together with the operating system and hardware

they refuse to sell the operating system as a free standing product to work on any architecture,

so any apple computer out of the box,
already has all its hardware compatible with the operating system

try 'adding' anything that's 'not' apple,
to upgrade your hardware

instant headache and instability,

and only by the Grace of Microsoft,
there is an 'Office' for apple

(always wondered why 'apple' can't/won't write compatible cross-platform software,

the Sun/Linux people do,
and have Open Office, that can do any microsoft office application, and even save it as a microsoft extension to send to others without open office,
and all *completely free*,
http://www.openoffice.org/

have nothing against the apple operating system,
even use it on windows ;-)

http://dailyapps.net/2008/03/hack-attack-dual-boot-leopard-and-windows-vista/

http://www.mininova.org/tor/1143557
(needs 'instructions',
and geek guidance ;-))

ideally,
the best combination is to use linux, (Ubuntu is totally free, and quite easy to use,
and has a magnificent community of free support,
totally *Lishmoh*
(as in;
'our predecessors have given freely of their knowledge, and gladly taught,
we are happy to do the same,
and hope and expect this of those who learn from us')
http://www.ubuntu.com/

Ubuntu allows for a painless dual-boot system to install alongside windows, and learn and get comfortable as you go,
(you do not have to quit your present operating system)

or to allow for running windows within ubuntu
http://www.vmware.com/products/ws/
(vmware is 'not' free,
and also requires a 'real' cd for windows xp installation)

anyway,
don't worry

apple's stock will continue to rise from their i-phones and anorexic laptops ;-)
(even though their left-wing politics are not worthy of your support)

n.b.

if you want to see a *real* 'star wars' computer,
check this out;

and if you want 'armored', see:

(absolutely no contest between this and the anorexic mac ;-) )

Bad news, recently I heard that Scotty was not beamed up. Rather, sadly, the opposite seems to have happened.

Without doubt Apple makes the superior computer; and hands down the better operating system.

If only the software kept up.

Enjoy the new toys! I recently purchased similar items from them, although my MacBook is white. Not everyone can be as cool as you, Mr. Avrech.

Did you get the free printer, too?

Apple is great- I got my rebates for the free items within a week of the purchase!

Soccer Dad:

Nebuch, poor Scotty.

I use just a few selected programs and Apple is just fine for my purposes.

Tnspr569:

Black is the Hollywood color this month. Have to keep up my cool credentials:-)

Yup, got the free printer. I chose the Canon photo printer.

Like you, I received my rebate within 3 days.

I love Apple's great customer service.

Lance get the Macbook, max out the memory (Kingston is a lot cheaper than Apple). Then use the bootcamp feature in the latest Mac OS and load Windows on a partition (about one hour) and you will have the fastest Windows laptop around. Choose which system you want to load when you boot the computer.

You don't realize how much slower Windows is until you run both systems on the same machine. By the time Windows XP professional loads on the machine (running native) when running in Mac OS I have logged on the net, got my email updated and am browsing my favorite site. With plenty of time to spare. However for games always run Windows native.

If you don't mind a little bit of a speed hit, get Parallels for Windows and run Windows while running Mac OS and have both OS and run apps from which ever system you prefer. But definitely max out the memory if you are go this route, it does make a noticeable difference.

Robert,
You are now listening to my daughters music? (And yes Yael has an accent) Will wonders never cease? Another wonderment, a month ago I didn't know what a blog was and now I have one. But it's a bit of a ruse, only enough so I can register for the jblogger's convention without appearing to be a goy saboteur!
Regards!

Cuban Bob:

Thanks so much for the technical info. I've forwarded it to Lance.

Posted by: Robert J. Avrech [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 7, 2008 03:59 PM

Elizabeth:

You don't have to be a blogger to register for the convention.

My bad. I didn't make that clear.

Nice blog, congrats.
