President Elect Obama

Beis Midrash, Poland.jpg
“Boys, no matter who's elected POTUS, we daven for his health and for HaShem to give him wisdom.”

So: as Ohio, New Mexico and Pennsylvania go to Obama I turn off the news channel, click on my DVR library and screen a couple of old movies.

Karen is working at the bedroom desk.

The love of my life has this uncanny ability to hear the movie I'm watching and correctly evaluate its plot, the year it was produced—give or take a year or two—and even the film's quality. It's really remarkable because Karen has no special knowledge or interest in classic Hollywood movies. In fact, the sound tracks of silent movies—wall to wall scores—send her into a Homeland Security red-alert frenzy, so either I mute the sound or just screen the film when Karen isn't around.

Anyhoo.

At one point, Karen, without even looking up, says: “Boy, you really don't want to watch anymore election coverage, do you?”

Meaning, the film I'm watching is not so hot.

“True, true.”

A few minutes later, I'm blasted with a revelation and I hit the pause button on the remote.

“Hey, now that Obama's President does this mean that they'll stop accusing us of being a racist country?”

Oh man, wouldn't it be great if race hustlers like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are, um, retired from their less than honorable industries.

Without missing a beat, Karen responds: “Robert, those who voted for Obama are not racists, the rest of us have to be sent to reeducation camps.”

Karen and I congratulate President-elect Obama and pray that he will use the awesome powers of his office with wisdom and justice.

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

1. No profanity.

2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

Robert,
so, what DID you watch last night? We watched Harold Lloyd in "Dr. Jack". That lifted our spirits for a while.

Gary:

The Barretts of Wimpole Street, 1934, Charles Laughton, Norma Shearer and Fredric March. Talky, but Laughton is amazing.

I love Lloyd and have Dr. Jack on my DVR. Plan to screen it when Karen's not looking.

African Americans are now part of the establishment. America is no longer controled by "rich white people" as reverend Wright would say. If a black person fails in their endeavors, whatever that may be, they can no longer claim that it is the system that failed them. And I think to be fair to Obama, his words are hinting at that.

Ted:

I assume Obama believes this. Uh, he kinda has to, right? I'm just waiting to see if the usual suspects recede into the ash bin of history with their oppressive, damaging, racist, and self-serving arguments. People like, ta-da, Jeremiah Wright, Louis Farrakhan, Father Fleger, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Tavis Smiley, Maxine Waters... Hey, my fingers are getting positively numb typing all these names. I could go on and on but heck, you're a smart guy, you get the point.

There will always be the excuse makers of the world. The fact that Obama is now President won't stop many of them. It's a world view issue. At least that's how I see it.

Remember, prior to the election there were many people of color who were saying that Obama isn't really black. Where did all of those people go?

The "race card" is too useful for a lot of folks to give up....you're going to hear a lot of it in the years to come. And, if history is a guide, our new President is not going to call them down over it, at least so long as they are serving his ends. That would be out of character.
.
I guess we CAN pray that past results are no guarantee of what we'll see in the future, but with people generally, you're not likely to win much money that way......
.
I'll be praying, but I'd advise everyone to watch their backs pretty carefully.

Take a deep breath. Get ready. The Republican campaign is about to begin.

I hate to say it guys; but as of Jan 30, just before Shabbos; I was informed that Jewish people are no longer welcome in this country. Shabbat Shalom! I would take my family to Isreal, but our "kind" of Jew isn't welcome there either.
We still refuse to give in to despair or hate. We still refuse to let fear rule us; Ha Shem is our Rock.
