What They Don't Teach You in Film School

Linda Darnell

Scheduled for release through United Artists, Summer Storm was directed by Douglas Sirk. Filming began in the spring of 1944, with The Wicked and the Weak as a working title. Linda got on well with Sirk, although things didn’t always progress smoothly. One particularly bad day, the director had shot sixteen takes of an important scene in a greenhouse. Linda grew tired, embarrassed, and was almost in tears.

Finally, Sirk ordered, “Everybody take a breather.”

Putting his arm around Linda’s shoulder, he said, “Now I want you to relax.”

Suddenly he yanked her across his knee and spanked her hard.

“Now you go out there and do that scene right!” he snapped.

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

1. No profanity.

2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

yeah - i'm sure that'd work really well for angelina or cate

I have had great success with that technique. No really, it yields tremendous results.

Would never work today - the lawyers would veer from chasing ambulances to make a director's life a little bit of h-ll.

Check out this column by Judea Pearl on the anniversary of the death of his son Daniel. It is the best I've seen of distilling where so many in this country have gone wrong regarding terrorism and points the finger straight at the media and ou universities. If there is any accounting for what we do in our lives, Bill Moyers and Juan Cole will be spending an eternity where the temperature is very hot.

ha...I think if more actors were treated like this maybe films would be a lot better!

Films are great and it always amazes me just how far movies have come. I love a good movie that is cleverly made by a great filmmaker.

Very funny post.
