Hollywood Celebrates U.S. Military: Flashback

Joan Crawford as Miss Liberty.
During this Memorial Day Weekend we pay tribute those who have fallen, and those who sacrifice so much in the cause of freedom.
Remember when Hollywood celebrities flocked across the globe to entertain and support American troops? Remember when Hollywood—as a community—denounced tyrants, Jew-haters, and mass murderers?
My father was a Rabbi, a Chaplain in the 42nd Division during World War II and the Korean War. He often told me just how much the troops loved and respected their Hollywood supporters.
Here’s a brief sampler of what Hollywood patriotism once looked like.
In February 1954, on her honeymoon in Japan with Joe DiMaggio, Marilyn Monroe took time off and traveled to Korea to entertain the troops. Monroe appeared on stage wearing skimpy outfits in freezing temperatures. The men adored her. She performed ten shows in four days, in front of audiences that totaled more than 100,000 soldiers and Marines.

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.
1. No profanity.2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism. That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.
Not a big MM fan, but this pic could be what (excuse the pun) finally puts high waisted pants back -wait for it-- over the top!
Channel 17 (aka The Superstation)used to air the Cagney/Cohen classic 'Yankee Doodle Dandy' on Memorial Day when I was growing up in the '70s. I could not get enough.
Appreciate your blog and rec to friends...

Thanks to the education afforded by Seraphic Secret I have learned over the months abo0ut the tragic life of Carole Landis.
To think both she and MM were selfless in giving their time to entertain American servicemen overseas and to think how both of them were evidently so depressed.
Both committed suicide.
It's too bad neither of them evidently knew how much they meant to countless GIs.
If we could only see ourselves as others see us, a sage once said.

I think we've discussed this before. Hedy Lamarr supported the war effort from a technical standpoint. She was the co-inventor of the frequency hopping radio.
