Best of the Jewish Blogosphere

Ima on and off the Bima presents Haveil Havalim #251.

And here's a great “educational” short from 1937.

Screen star Constance Bennett demonstrates her daily beauty routine.

Who knew?

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

1. No profanity.

2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

Robert,

Can you explain to me why stars of that era use that weird way of (not)pronouncing their r's? I don't know any natural accent like that one. It's really strange and to me sounds faintly Elmer Fudd-like.

It's bothered me for years (and I don't like the accent, which is why it's bothered me for years, hahaha).

Yes, I know, I do wonder about strange things. :-)

Dr. Carol:

Theatrical elocution was considered highly desirable when the talkies came in. As movies evolved into realism, the "pearl tones" were abandoned.
