Egypt and the Islamist Orbit

hosni-mubarak-starofdavid.jpg
Signs like this are common in the streets of Cairo. It’s not enough that Mubarak is a dictator but to truly demonize him a Star of David is superimposed on his image. Subtle, huh?

It seems all but certain that Hosni Mubarak will relinquish the reins of power and cruise into comfortable exile, either in London or Saudi Arabia.

If you’re anticipating a transition to Jeffersonian democracy in Egypt, well, don’t hold your breath.

Mohamed El Baradei, former head of the IAE, who used his tenure to shield Iran’s nuclear program, is in negotiations with the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist group that gave birth to Hamas, Hizbullah and Al Quaeda.

Here’s a statement by the Muslim Brotherhood on their goals:

The Ikhwan [religious militia] must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and ‘sabotaging’ its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.

Don’t forget that it was the Muslim Brotherhood who assassinated Anwar Sadat. His crime? Making peace with Israel.

El Baradei presents himself as a moderate, but he defends the Muslim Brotherhood, and has long been a bitter foe of Israel. And it’s well known in the streets of Cairo that the Muslim Brotherhood has been financing El Baradei’s campaign.

What’s probably going to happen in Egypt follows a familiar pattern which we have seen in Iran, Gaza, Algeria, and is now unfolding in Lebanon. A regime is overthrown by a sudden and popular uprising. The left, the moderates, and the Islamists work together for a while to form a unity government, and then the Islamists turn on their allies, slaughter them, and impose an Islamic Republic.

In Tunisia, the long exiled Islamist leader Rachid Ghanouchi, has just returned to cheering mobs of devoted followers. Eventually, Tunisia will fall into the Islamist orbit.

Keep an eye on Jordan where the Hashemites rule an uneasy and resentful population made up of over 80% Palestinians. King Abdullah doesn’t even speak Arabic with a proper desert accent—he was educated in America’s Deerfield Academy and Oxford, England. Thus he’s viewed as something of a foreigner. Meanwhile, Queen Rania spends money on a jet set life style that ordinary Jordanians bitterly resent.

Syria is making noises to the American media about reforms, but Assad’s brutal police state makes Egypt look like Sesame Street. There’s a big difference between authoritarian rulers like Mubarak and totalitarian monsters like Assad.

The Saudis are, no doubt, shaking in their boots. Iranian influence is spreading like a cancer and America, under Obama, is absolutely clueless and useless in checking the ascendancy of the jihadists. When Obama gave his dopey kumbaya speech in Egypt, the first few rows of VIP seats were occupied by, you guessed it, the Muslim Brotherhood. No doubt, the jihadists chuckled in glee at Obama’s hopeless naivete. As Daniel Greenfield astutely points out, Obama has lost the Middle East. In fact, Obama’s hope and change is working very nicely for the jihadists. They are getting more than they ever hoped for and the change has all been to their advantage. Well, that’s what happens when you bash Israel and make nice to Islamist thugs.

No matter what happens, one thing is certain: Israel/Jews will be blamed for, well, anything and everything. The George Soros funded Media Matters has unleashed their chief Jewish Jew-hater M.J. Rosenberg, blaming “media owning Jews, the Israel lobby, and AIPAC” for the instability in Egypt.

Finally, when you’re told how moderate is the Muslim Brotherhood, keep in mind their catchy motto:

Allah is our objective. The Prophet is our leader. Qur’an is our law. Jihad is our way.

Comment Rules

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

  1. No profanity.
  2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

It’s all Israel’s fault… don’t you watch the Jews, ummm, I mean, News?
Seriously, the fanatical right blames the Jews for controlling the media (which is a premise many idiots seem to accept) and the radical left (including the powerful liberal Jews in American society) blame the conservative Jews for every ill under the sun! Two strikes against you, Robert. You’re Jewish and a conservative…

Here’s what one demonstrator proclaimed loudly into a reporter’s microphone: “Free Egypt, destroy the United States, destroy Israel.”

Everyone is looking at Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Jordan etc and wondering what the political landscape will look like when everything shakes out. But whatever happens it is likely that Israel will get the worst of it as it is hard to believe any country will move to better relations with the infidels in their midst.
The American Revolution really was an anomaly. Most revolutions bring about worse leaders and regime (think French Revolution). If there are any Jeffersonian democrats in Egypt, they are likely found in the library at the American University trying to keep their head down so they can keep their head. There is no indication that the muslims in the ME are interested in making a big move into the 14th century.

Naive people are cheering the potential overthrow of Mubarak. They expect the aftermath to turn up roses. They are sadly deluded. For my part, I’d be glad to see Mubarak do a Tiananmen square on these people. Better the devil we know.

In his book The 13 Clocks, James Thurber introduced a creature called the Todal. The Todal punished evildoers for not being evil enough. When I think of the Shah or Mubarak, I think of them suffering for not being evil (or brutal) enough. The Mullahs and Assad, need not fear they are (for now) sufficiently brutal.

Years ago when I was in Cairo – and visiting Anwar Sadat’s tomb – right across the street from the grand stands where he was gunned down by the Muslim Brotherhood – I asked the guide what the Egyptians thought of him.
I was expecting to hear a positive answer – after all he brought peace wityh Israel – I had seend damage 13 yewars later at Port Said from the 1773 war -
The guide said that he was not popular, ignoring the domestic problems while solving the international (read regional) ones.
Point is, what we in the west “think” is going on – or hope that is going on (read Palestinian talks) vs reality are usually 2 different things.
I fear exactly what Robert is saying – is in the wind.

There is even more history on the MB than most of us realized. I found this last night in American Thinker, and thought I’d pass it along.

the Moslem Brothers were a small, unpopular group of anti-modern fanatics unable to attract members, until they were adopted by Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich beginning in the 1930s. Under the tutelage of the Third Reich, the Brothers started the modern jihadi movement,
