Friday Fashion: Bag Ladies

In 1926, before Marie Magdalene Dietrich became Marlene Dietrich, she posed for this handbag ad. As you can see, Weimar Germany was quite permissive when it came to racy images.

Seraphic Secret believes that fashion is more than a frivolous pursuit for the rich and idle.

Everyone wants to look good. Everyone dresses and primps in order to create an attractive shell. The image we present to the public is an idea of self: glamour babe, rock star, chaste girl, sports guy, yeshiva student, disaffected youth, businessman.

When a sloppily dressed person insists they don’t want to be judged by their appearance but by their inner selves, we can only shake our heads in despair and explain in our most patient Montessori tone that surface reflects the soul.

Accessories play a vital role in a woman’s arsenal of glamour. And excluding footwear, handbags are, no doubt, a woman’s most cherished accessory. It’s not only an item of style but a utilitarian object. Within their bags women haul most everything that is indispensable to their every day lives.

Here are a few of the latest bags, purses and clutches that caught our eye.

Jill Sander designed this quirky purse. Perfect for a trip to the Egyptian pyramids or strolling down Madison Avenue.

The Cambridge Satchel Company updates the classic office briefcase in a zippy green. Hey, take a look at the blue nail polish. Seraphic Secret has seen that color before...

Yup, the tragic Bella Darvi, b. Bayla Wegier, wears the same blue shade in The Egyptian, 1954.

Okay, back to bags. This Alexander Wang creation has that no-nonsense doctor vibe going—if your doctor looks like Heidi Klum.

Kate Spade's witty Pineapple clutch will put a smile on your face. Insert a lead weight and this cool item becomes a very effective weapon. We like accessories that multitask.

Speaking of weapons, we have no idea who designed this, our very favorite handbag, but it redefines concealed carry. Tote this puppy and you are the ultimate in fierce!

Karen and I wish all our friends and relatives a miraculous Shabbat.

Comment Rules

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

  1. No profanity.
  2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

The necessity of women to carry a purse is the second best reason I’m glad I’m a guy.

Besides if you carry one of those you have to be able to stick your hand in and pull out the desired object among a 100 – all sign unseen.

Bill, a well made gun purse, such as those found at Creative Concealment have dedicated gun compartments – for the GUN ONLY – with separate access to this area.

Not only does this make the weapon easy to locate, but there is the option of shooting right through the purse if need be!

Here are some variations on your ‘favorite handbag’, available in black, brown, or tan leather, from an outfit in Austin, Texas.

The official name is the Town and Country Concealment Bag  (informally known as the gun purse)  and sells for far less than purses that look much worse.  ($48)

Love the bag with the space for a gun. And I think that Alexander Wang’s bag looks like it has a snake curled around it for a neat Eve vibe.
