Friday Fashion: Bags, Spring 2012

In 1956 while pregnant with Caroline, Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco was photographed in New York City by Life Magazine carrying a black crocodile Hermes bag, which she used to cover her pregnancy. After this picture was published the bag became a fashion hit and was renamed the Kelly bag.

A woman’s handbag is more than a place to dump the oh-so-necessary tools of everyday life. For Grace Kelly her bag was momentarily a shield.  For most women it is a highly personal world that contains secrets which the male of the species cannot begin to imagine.

As a fashion item, the woman’s handbag, in its multiple guises—satchel, shoulder, hobo, tote, clutch and evening bag—allows the woman to project personality and status in one easy glance. There is no better way of accessorizing an outfit than with a handbag.

For Spring 2012, the best designs are simple classic forms, highly structured with minimal adornment. For the devoted bag lady, here are Seraphic Secret’s picks for Spring.

Victoria Beckham

Gucci

VBH

Balmain

Tory Burch

Burak Uyan

Diane von Furstenberg

Dolce & Gabbana

3.1 Phillip Lim

Celine

Karen and I wish all our friends and relatives a lovely and inspirational Shabbat.

Seraphic Secret will be migrating to a new server over the weekend. There is a slight possibility that there might be a temporary interruption of service. But our new server will be faster, thus your Seraphic Secret experience will be greatly enhanced.

Comment Rules

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

  1. No profanity.
  2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

If I could only afford one of those bags, I’d pick the Tory Burch.

      Jackie:

As always, Hillary was a mess in that snot green outfit.

        Now, Robert,

Be nice! It wasn’t snot green, it was more like puke green LOL!

I actually met her once (briefly, for about a minute… just a handshake and hello) when she was still first lady. Politics aside, (just telling the truth) she was taller than you’d imagine, also slimmer and prettier in person, and she was quite elegant and gracious on that particular occasion.

Franny – now that is funny! I remember seeing the group picture on the Drudge Report (didn’t read the article)  and I thought it was a doctored up joke – everyone wearing white and Hillery with the snot/puke green! But it wasn’t Photoshopped!

Didn’t she get the memo? ;-)

Jackie – your phrase “interesting” reminds me of the joke about the cultured Southern woman and the brash braggart woman at LAX – meaning your term of “interesting” means you want to charm school! I wonder what Miranda Priestly would say about that shade ;-)

Dear Robert and Mr. Brandt: If I had ever been to charm school, I would know enough not to say “The first time I heard that joke, I laughed so hard, I almost fell off my dinosaur.” I’d also know enough not to say “Robert, that Balmain handbag is too busy.”

My vote goes for either the Victoria Beckham or Diane von Furstenberg
Simple flowing lines, elegant colors – bright but not loud.

    Prophet Joe:

The Celine is a clutch. I like the Mondrian colors. The doctor’s satchel you refer to was made by Celine. You have great taste.

I like some of these, but sometimes it’s hard to get the proper perspective as to size. Is the Celine an evening clutch, or a daily-carry suitcase?

I like one you had earlier which reminded me (and I think you mentioned it) of a doctor’s satchel. I like classic brown leather for daily wear — it goes well with my brown saddle shoes :)
