Friday Fashion: Spring 2012 Ready-to-Wear

Seraphic Secret likes to follow trends in fashion. Our mission is to bypass the slutwear that parades as cutting edge design and focus instead on beautifully tailored outfits that are both flattering, ladylike, and modest.

As always, we do not highlight pant suits; they are a crime against femininity.

We are happy to report that the most interesting trends are a return to a demure, feminine silhouette. Overpowering volume and outsized patterns are, for the most part, absent; a good thing if you’re over 20 years-old and  weigh more than a stalk of wheat. Instead, most designers focused on refined simple lines that can be worn by actual female human beings.

The best outfits are a welcome flashback to the Hollywood glamour of Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Talylor, Audrey Hepburn, Kim Novak, Tippi Hedrin and Eva Marie Saint.

Aquilano.Rimondi expertly marries Renaissance inspired body armor—embellished with silver and gold jacquard swirls—to a whispery pleated skirt. The detail is jaw dropping but does not overwhelm.

Calvin Klein does simple and elegant with a long, softly tailored silhouette in a luxurious golden textile. The look is sensual yet restrained.

The Rochas collection pays tribute to 50's glamour of Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly using such fabrics as double-face silk duchesse, plissé organza, and cotton piqué. We particularly like the head scarf over a beehive and the casual sandals.

This Valentino number is so sharply tailored it looks sculpted. Trimmed with black velvet flowers that define waist, hips, shoulders and neck, this is calm elegance. Jessica Biel, in the front row, kept whispering: “Beautiful!”

The spirit of Coco Chanel is alive and well with Karl Lagerfeld's latest collection for Chanel. This outfit in pale pink with perfectly proportioned Mandarin collar will never go out of style.

Band of Outsiders has created an outfit with a clever interplay of vertical and horizontal stripes that recalls school girl uniforms of the Edwardian milieu. Think “Picnic at Hanging Rock” chic.

No one has done more for the tailored white poplin shirt than Jil Sander. Here, paired with a body loving pencil skirt, the crisp white shirt is elevated to a sophisticated fashion statement. With some clever hunting you can copy this outfit on a budget at H&M.

Donna Karan hits it out of the park with her fencing jacket inspired tops and flowing ladylike skirts. The mute, earthy palette is surprisingly vibrant.

Karen and I wish all our friends and relatives a lovely and fashionable Shabbat.

Comment Rules

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

  1. No profanity.
  2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.
