Friday Footwear: Cool Tootsies

Photo by Nina Leen for Life magazine, 1947.

Millions of Americans are out of work. The federal deficit is a crime. We are on the edge of a double dip recession.

What to do?

Fashion designers are banking on happy, unexpected colors to dress up your tootsies.

Seraphic Secret has done the hard work of combing through the 2013 footwear collections and picking the very best designs. We’ve made sure to choose some nice, comfortable flats so you can stand in line at Chick-fil-A in support of religious speech.

Alas, Seraphic Secret only eats kosher food, but we join the Chicken-fil-A line in spirit and solidarity.

Suede flats by Nicholas Kirkwood.

Fendi reinterprets a classic pump in lizard for a crisp, romantic uptown look.

Kenzo brings vibrant color and texture to a simple sandal.

Charlotte Olympia adds ruffles and a platform to a color-blocked, open-toed, 40′s style pump.

Louis Vuitton’s witty take on the leopard print. Grrrrl power!

Jason Wu amps up the classic loafer in electric blue with eyelets that seem ready to wink.

Dolce and Gabbana’s woven canvas lace-up oxford with a wooden heel, recalls a style favored by Jazz Age librarians.

Gloria Swanson in a publicity still from the 1920′s is seen wearing the popular lace-up oxford. They had footwear then!

Karen and I wish all our friends and relatives a lovely and inspirational Shabbat.

Comment Rules

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

  1. No profanity.
  2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

Dear Robert: Shavuah Tov. Mosey on down to Chick-Fil-A for a cup of coffee or, depending on your personal level of kashrut, a green salad or a veggie-burger or an orangte juice.

    Robert,
    Re: My last comment.

Sorry, I realize it may not have been appropriate to use your comm box to go on about a personal family story of my own.
The point I was trying to make is that while I was raised with a value system that upholds traditional marriage between a man and woman, I was also raised to never hate, mistreat, or stop loving someone because of their sexual orientation. I deeply resent it when the label of “hater” is bandied about.

I like the Kenzo and Kirkwood examples – on Chick-fil-A a commenter at ChicagoBoyz had a great question – was the overwhelming show of support for Chick-fil-a due to a rebellion against “political correctness” or support of traditional marriage? I think it was a little of both and I think these tactics of the militant gays is backfiring against them.

Personally i have to wonder about the “Chicago Values” Rahm  Emanuel espouses – against Chich Fil-A but embracing the likes of Jeramiah Wright and Louis Ferrakhan.

Charlotte’s skyscraper pumps are the kinda footwear favoured by teenage girls for a evening on the tiles. Invariably worn with a handkerchief-sized dress, the youngsters can’t walk up a flight of stairs without two hands on the banister or assistance from the boyfriend, clad in jeans with a waistline below the buttocks.

Why is it that if you disagree with re-inventing a fundamental social institution you are labelled a “hater”? Back when I was a kid, I had a dear Uncle “G.” who divorced his wife and came out of the closet. Thereafter, he and his partner (We called “Uncle T”) were invited to, and attended every family wedding, christening, holiday, etc., as a couple. He even broke the news to us that Rock Hudson was gay! (heard it through the grapevine I guess) When he moved California, he regaled us with a rumor that Rock had participated in some kind of wedding wearing a white gown and veil! (Who knows if this was true). He described it as a kind of farce, and it never would have occurred to Uncle G. or Uncle T. to expect my staid “Nonno” or any of us to attend anything like a wedding for the two of them.

Did we “hate” him? On the contrary, we loved him to pieces, and I still do. RIP, Uncle G., xxoo.

Dittoes on Chick-Fil-A. It’s almost worth going in and just buying a soda. (And now that I’ve heard about it on the radio, I know how to pronounce their name, too…)

    Have a great Shabbos.

I wondered about the pronunciation too. Once I heard it, I wondered why I wondered.

Wow, Robert, what a post. You have some of the nicest looking shoes I’ve seen in ages, and some of the worst looking too! Love the saddle shoes (I know they’re your weakness!) and the comb is perfect. I think the Fendi lizard pumps are incredibly sexy — somehow I was envisioning my wife in those — and the flats (Kirkwood) and loafers (Wu) are excellent. The canvas oxfords are an awesome design, but I have a hard time imagining those colors in an outfit. Not so crazy about the Olympia and the Louis Vuitton….

Nice post, Robert. I know nothing about shoes, or art in general, but I know what I like when I see it. Last night I got to watch Myrna Loy in The Thin Man, so today’s gonna be a wonderful day! :-)

Have you ever seen “Test Pilot” (1938) with Loy, Gable and Tracy?

It was Myrna’s favorite of her films and I think her very best.

        Robert:

With Gable, Tracy and Loy, Victor Fleming handling the direction, this film needs to be available on Blu Ray. It was available in VHS format. What has  happened. Gable is out there. So are the others. But, not Test Pilot. My copy, recorded from a Turner broadcast is not entirely adequate. Wish it were otherwise.

          Barry:

Have no idea why “Test Pilot” has been neglected. My copy is also from TCM.
