Friday Footwear: Head Over Heels

Childhood milestones abound: Learning to crawl then walk, the use of language, birthday celebrations, bathroom training.

Religious rites of passage usher our children into the realm of G-d and spirit, the place where morality and personal responsibility merge.

And for little girls, clothing often assumes epic shifts in the life cycle.

Yesterday, Offspring #2—grinning hugely as we chatted online—told us that Ma’yan Ariel just acquired her first pair of high heels.

Testing the unfamiliar tippy heels, Ma’ayan clomps and teeters like an newborn colt. And before you know it, she has mastered the art of walking in a high wedge. Already, Ma’ayan dreams of scaling even greater heels: Christain Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo.

Ma’ayan Ariel senses that her glamorous new shoes introduces her to a new frontier of girlhood. Indeed, deep in her heart, Ma’ayan understands that wearing her pretty pink heels makes her more like mommy. And for Ma’ayan this is life’s greatest joy.

Karen and I wish all our friends and relatives a peaceful and comforting Shabbat.

Comment Rules

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

  1. No profanity.
  2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

    May Ma’ayan’s “kloppy shoes” (that’s what we call them) wear as well as our daughters’ Barbie shoes did! We’ve seen other-branded “kloppies” form Target rip within weeks, but the Barbie shoes lasted at least four years. Ours were light blue, sparkly, with downy white poufs – real fathers! – instead of pictures.

    C’mon, Offspring #2, the look isn’t complete without a matching pink purse…say, a BARBIE (TM) purse! :}

    Years from now when Ma’ayan asks what happened the first week of November, 2010 you can pass over the news of the election or the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and say the most important event was her first pair of heels.
    And you will be right.

    One great step for Maya, one huge leap for womanhood.
