Enjoy!

Karen interprets the leaning tree of Beverlywood. As we were snapping the picture, a lady jogger quipped: “That tree needs Viagra.”

Hate your passport photo? I’ll bet Greta Garbo wasn’t thrilled with her 1984 picture. Not exactly MGM worthy.

At the store where I buy my art supplies, there’s a wonderful saleswoman who is quite serious about art.

Intertitle from “A Sailor Made Man” (1921) starring Harold Lloyd and Mildred Davis. Lloyd and Davis married in 1923.
Karen and I wish all our friends and relatives a lovely, inspirational Shabbat, and a happy New Year.

The Harold Lloyd & Mildred Davis photo reminded me that I’d read once where she commented in an interview that she never understood why Harold needed more than her, a quotation that saddened me. That reminded me that before he felt well-off financially to marry anyone he & Bebe Daniels might have married. An interesting overview I read some years ago is at http://www.silentsaregolden.com/articles/bebeharoldarticle.html. Meanwhile, here are some photos with Mildred Davis (http://mildreddavis.tumblr.com/), including a few with him sans the famous glasses, without which he was rarely recognized — an aspect that inspired Siegel & Schuster to give Clark Kent glasses.

Sadly, Mildred developed a pretty serious drinking problem as the years went by. Thanks so much for the excellent links.

I knew Max Showalter who worked with Marilyn in both Bus Stop and Niagara. His heart went out to her. A very nice man. He liked her, but…As for me, I don’t care for her or her screen persona, all gerrymandered nerve endings.

Her performance in “Some Like it Hot” is just brilliant. Billy Wilder and MM clashed during production every single day. The shoot was a nightmare because of her craziness. After the film was completed, Wilder was asked if he’d ever again work with MM. He said he would because even though she was nuts she registered on-camera with that magical something that comes along maybe every hundred years. The only thing that counts, he said, is the finished film. Everything else is just beside the point.

I suppose for Billy it was all right but, not everyone wanted to work with him either. And, Some Like It Hot is just great, but her singing is what I mean by gerrymandering.

I would like to revise my thought re MM having just seen How To Marry A Millionaire after quite some time. She is darling. As is Betty Grable, Rory Calhoun and especially Cameron Mitchell. The picture appears to be nothing but dated froth and that is certainly not the case. It has hidden depth, outstanding performances and a look second to very few.

Poor Greta – to go from border to border and her the officials say “YOU’RE Greta Garbo? ”
I have said it before but you have a good eye for the lens, Robert.

You’ve got to hand it to Greta. She didn’t even bother to try and make herself camera-ready. Thanks so much for the kind words. I just like to snap cool stuff with my iPhone.

Sorry to disappoint, but that’s not Casa Avrech. That’s a house I pass by every day on my regular walk. I’m too lazy to put up decorations for anything:-) Have a happy New Year.
