Gloria Grahame: Marriage Hollywood Style

Gloria Grahame

Gloria Grahame

Before Woody and Soon-Yi there was Gloria and Anthony.

In June 1948, the day after that she divorced her first husband, actress Gloria Grahame (1923 – 1981) wed director Nicholas Ray.

The marriage was troubled right from the start and ended when Ray walked in on Grahame while she was in bed with another man.

Actually, a boy.

He was 13-year-old Anthony Ray, Nick’s son from a previous marriage.

Grahame and Ray divorced in 1952, right before Grahame won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in The Bad and the Beautiful.

Gloria Grahame married twice more. To writer Cy Howard in 1954, and then, in 1960, to her ex-teenage lover and former stepson, Anthony Ray.

The marriage between the talented, but deeply troubled actress — she was probably bipolar — and Anthony lasted 14 years and produced two sons. It ended in 1974.

Said Grahame on marrying her former stepson: “I married Nicholas Ray, the director. People yawned. Later on I married his son, and from the press’s reaction you’d have thought I was committing incest or robbing the cradle!”

Director Nicholas Ray (1911 – 1979) self-destructed in Hollywood with drink and drugs. He ended his days teaching film at Binghamton University in Upstate New York. One of his ex students told me said that Ray was “always high and a complete disaster as a teacher.” Anthony Ray (b. 1937) had a long career as a well-regarded Assistant Director.

Here’s Grahame winning her Oscar. She delivers the best Oscar speech ever.

Comment Rules

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

  1. No profanity.
  2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

Robert, Her piccadillos notwithstanding, Gloria Grahame’s beauty puts that of the movie stars of today to shame. She is breath taking. Of course those of today are gorgeous, by any standards, but Gloria makes one thankful that they are a man, if only because G-d made a woman such as she. Pictures don’t actually do her justice, it is only in moving film, such as at this Oscar moment that you truly get to see her real beauty, and also you see her personality shine through in her speech. Fantastic. No one can criticize her for that one.

The eye patch rang a bell. Back in the mid 70’s I bartended at a place across the street from UT’s RTF (radio television film) building in Austin. Ray apparently had some teaching gig over there. He used to come in and drink (signed a ceiling tile the old owner still has). As far as the kind of person he was ….well I’ll leave that to Robert and the story above.

Yes, later in life Ray had to wear an eye patch.

No telling us we are using too much energy (while flying in her private jet) or any of a dozen other cause célèbre? She was pretty – but hard to live with.

She should have been arrested and charged with corrupting the morals of a minor. You want a moving Oscar acceptance speech? Try Louise Fletcher, accepting her Oscar for ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST. Her parents were deaf and she gives part of it in sign language.

Nick Ray was poison and Gloria was a victim. Everyone’s. Tony is alive, someone should find out what he thinks.

I’m wondering if I would self-destruct with drink and drugs if I found my wife in bed with my son from a previous marriage.

Tragically, Ray was self-destructing with drink, drugs and an uncertain sexuality well before he discovered Gloria in bed with his son.

And no political pontification from her. What a great girl, and fine performer.
