Hidden Hollywood: Marilyn Monroe’s Secret Note

On April 28, 1952, the medical staff at Cedars of Lebanon, L.A. wheeled Marilyn Monroe into surgery to have her appendix removed. The doctors pulled back her gown to find the following note taped to her stomach:
Dear Dr. Rabwin,
cut as little as possible I know it seems vain but that doesn’t really enter in to it. The fact I’m a woman is important and means much to me.
Save please (I can’t ask enough) what you can – I’m in your hands. You have children and you must know what it means – please Dr Rabwin – I know somehow you will!
thank you – thank you – thank you – For God’s sakes Dear Doctor no ovaries removed – please again do whatever you can to prevent large scars.
Thanking you with all my heart.
Marilyn Monroe

Monroe’s ovaries were left intact, and Dr. Rabwin left only a small scar.

Of course, MM never had any children. She did, however, suffer four miscarriages, due possibly (one pregnancy was ectopic) to her excessive drinking and pill popping. But she also had, at least, thirteen abortions, thus it’s also possible that those operations had tragic lingering side effects due to infection.

Wow. The more I have learned about MM here, the more demons I saw that she contended with.
