Iran: The Shadow War

Iranian security forces inspect the site where a magnetic bomb attached to a car by a motorcyclist exploded outside a university in Tehran on Wednesday, killing a scientist and injuring two other people, according to Iranian news agencies.

As the Iranians race to acquire nuclear weapons, a shadow war is being waged against the totalitarian Islamic regime.

Of course, the Iranians are fighting back. They arrested Arizona-born Amir Mirzai Hekmati,a former Marine of Persian descent, on charges of—what else?—spying for the CIA. Hekmati has been condemned to death. This the method used by the Persians—and the North Koreans—to leverage political power. In exchange for this unfortunate American’s life, they will demand the easing of economic sanctions.

Meanwhile, one of the most dangerous jobs in the world continues to be that of anyone connected to the Iranian nuclear program.

Feel good story of the day:

TEHRAN — An Iranian scientist involved in purchasing equipment for the Islamic Republic’s main nuclear enrichment facility was assassinated Tuesday when a magnetic bomb attached to his car exploded in morning rush-hour traffic, Iranian media reported.

Iranian Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi blamed the attack on “Zionists” and “those who claim they are against terrorism,” not-so-veiled references to Israel and the United States, the semiofficial Fars News Agency reported.

The foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast was more explicit. “These actions are being committed by the Zionist regime and its agents with the support of several European countries and especially U.S. officials,” the semi-official Islamic Students News Agency quoted him as saying.

Comment Rules

Seraphic Secret is private property, that's right, it's an extension of our home, and as such, Karen and I have instituted two Seraphic Rules and we ask commentors to act respectfully.

  1. No profanity.
  2. No Israel bashing. We debate, we discuss, we are respectful. You know what Israel bashing is. The world is full of it. Seraphic Secret is one of the few places in the world that will not tolerate this form of anti-Semitism.

That's it. Break either of these rules and you will be banned.

Don’t be naive, the US Marine arrested in Iran most likely does have ties to the Western intelligence community. However that’s not the issue at the moment. What is important is the ease at which the CIA/Mossad can infiltrate into the heart of Tehran and pick off Iran’s elite Nuclear scientists. In my opinion they should target all nuclear technicians as well.

He may be connected to western intelligence agencies, but we just don’t know and we certainly can’t take Iran’s word for it. Everyone they arrest or shoot or hang or torture is allegedly a Mosssad or CIA agent. I have a feeling that a large number of dissident agents are shuttling between Kurdistan and Tehran rather freely. The Iranians have never been able to contain the Kurds. And the Kurds have extensive ties to the Mossad—not the CIA, they have maybe one or two Kurd speakers with desks—so we can expect a lot more Kabooms!

Apologists for Iran always say that there si no danger from the regime getting nukes because they know that if they attack the U.S. or Israel their country would be flattened in retaliation.

First, I am not sure Obama would retaliate.  If I remember from the debates in 2008 with HRC, he said first we would have to make sure who was responsible, the use proportional response blah blah blah.  He’d talk the Iranians to death before he’d bomb them.

Second, the danger with N Korea or Iran is that they will give the bomb to proxys and will claim plausible deniability.  Obama would have our intelligence and military forces chasing their tales looking for Iran’s fingerprints.  The weapons of mass destruction in Iraq would be brought up ad infinitum.  MSNBC would have 24 hours of documentaries about the Israeli lobby and AIPAC.

So it is good that these tactics are being used on Iran.  Israel does a better job of keeping a secret than the CIA so hopefully the NYT and WashPost won’t try to win a Pulitzer Prize by exposing this operation.

      Johnny:

The MAD doctrine is not operative when you are dealing with religious fanatics. Further, the MAD doctrine goes out the window because Israel is a one-country nuclear bomb—one hit destroys the society, and Iran which can absorb multiple nuclear strikes.

But the main strategic danger is that as a nuclear power, the balance of power in the ME shifts to Iran and the client states who will shift into her orbit as soon as she goes nuclear. When that happens, Israel becomes a prisoner and the country will probably suffer extensive emigration. America will have zero influence and Iran will emerge as a mad power, much like North Korea. It’s a frightening scenario.

I think the Mossad is doing the heavy lifting, but who knows? I would love to have to have the story of that barracks blowing up along with the General in charge of…(what was it – the entire program?)

The argument against bombing the nuclear facilities is that they are too well protected and disbursed.  So attacking the nuclear personnel working on their bomb seems to be an easier task.  And Mossad will get the credit whether they deserve it or not.

As I said, Israel has extensive ties with the Kurds who have been fighting the Mullahs for several hundred years.
