Yesterday was Yom Yerushalayim, Jerusalem Day, in which the unification of the city in 1967 is celebrated. Take a look at the history of Jerusalem in this brief video. Empires rise and fall but the Jewish people continue to return to the promised land, and to their holy city.
Matti Friedman has a fine essay in Tablet about Jerusalem with some lovely photos.
This picture of a Jewish saleswoman helping an Arab Muslim customer with her eye makeup is particularly powerful. It displays the true nature of Jerusalem, the Jewish people, and their relationship with a good portion of their Arab neighbors.
Of course, the AP, the N.Y. Times, Reuters, Salon.com — name a liberal/leftist outlet — would never run such a picture. Their entire coverage of Israel/Jews is to promote a narrative (AKA a lie) that paints the Jewish nation as a colonial oppressor and the Arab Muslims as blameless victims.
I saw the Dead Sea Scrolls at the LA Science Museum several weeks ago. It (the display) is all about history and archeology. Very interesting.
That’s probably why chalitzah involves footwear: a woman knows you mean it if you’ll take your sandal off for her. Just be sure not to spit into in HER shoe.
I note that you also have a small child and a woman shopping for shoes in this photo too! 🙂
Well, I didn’t take the picture. But let’s face it, the relationship between women and their footwear is maybe as old as Judaism’s attachment to Zion.
