I’ve developed close friendships with several LAPD officers over the past few years.
They love making fun of all the stupid stuff they see on TV cop shows. At the same time, the officers I know — men and women alike — are dying to get hired as consultants on cop shows so they can meet hot actors and get paid a boatload of money for making stuff up for these dopey programs.
As I talk with these officers at length and in depth, it becomes clear that they feel deeply alienated from society. They are “on the job” while the rest of us have no clue what it takes to do the job.
The police officers I have spoken with save their most extreme reactions for the Black Lives Matter race hustlers. They see the movement as a direct assault on their lives, and most of them confide that they no longer attempt to do any real police work. The cops I speak to just want to get through the day without fear of losing their jobs and pensions because of some false accusation of police brutality.
While these conversations sound pretty depressing, the cops I know have the extraordinary ability to poke fun at themselves and at the cowardly politicians and police bureaucrats who make a misery of their lives.
Last week I asked one of my cop friends if there was anything that gave him hope.
He surprised me by saying: “I’m addicted to all the CCTV YouTubes from Israel. An Arab tries to knife a Jew and boom, surprise, the Jew pulls a piece and no more Arab. And even when the Jew isn’t carrying, someone else shows up — in, like, seconds — and unleashes hell. It’s f***ing beautiful! It’s f***ing inspirational!”
