I can remember something a lobbyist said that resonated with me. When someone said that “those legislators must me pretty smart” he laughed, saying for many it is the first real job they’ve had.
It is funny in that most jobs have a minimum requirement – you have to have experience in “that” before you can do “this”.
Most legislators have no experience running a small business.
After retiring from politics, George McGovern ran the Stratford Inn in Connecticut.
It was an eye opener for him. He said that had he known in office what he knows now he would have voted different for many things.
I remember that; one of the few occasions that someone with feelings rather than skills addressed that issue.
