Here are some classic Hollywood New Years images.

Betty Grable and her, um, legs help usher in a new year.

 

Clara Bow was a huge star in silent films. She appeared in eleven talkies, but she was uncomfortable with her voice, her thick Brooklyn accent, and her fan base dissolved. At age 26 her career was basically over.

Jane Greer’s best movie is Out of the Past with Robert Mitchum (1947), a noir masterpiece in which she plays Kathie Moffat, the ultimate femme fatale. In the UK the film was released as Build My Gallows High, which is the name of the novel by Daniel Mainwaring, on which the film is based.

 

Donna Reed is best remembered as Donna Stone, the middle class stay-at-home mom in The Donna Reed Show which ran from 1958-1966. But don’t forget that she was magnificent as Mary Hatch Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), and even better as the, um, bar girl, Lorene Burke, in From Here to Eternity (1953) for which she received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Yvette Mimieux’s best movie roles were in The Time Machine, 1960, and Where the Boys Are, 1960. In her numerous TV roles I have a soft spot for the 1964 Dr. Kildare two part series “Tyger, Tyger.” Mimieux retired in 1992 and is now 77 years old.

 

And of course, the always patriotic Marilyn Monroe greets the Marines.
