Here in California, Governor Brown has signed approximately 800 new laws and regulations. We cannot buy the light bulbs of our choice. We cannot purchase toilets that flush properly. We must install a conservation filter in showers which turn a powerful spray into a pathetic dribble. Now, when I go to my local grocery store, convenient plastic bags have been banned. And there’s a 10 cent tax on paper bags.
In CA public schools, children as young as kindergarteners can now choose which bathroom, shower or locker to use. Bathrooms, showers and lockers are, ahem, gender neutral.
Seraphic Secret wonders: Does this mean that a boy can choose to go to a girl’s bathroom on Monday because he feels like a girl, and then on Tuesday it’s into the boy’s bathroom because he now feels like a boy? Is there a statute of limitations on gender identity? We assume not. After all, it’s all about how you feel. Physical facts have been relegated to the realm of metaphysics.
The law also require students be allowed to participate in sports programs as the gender to which they identify.
We can look forward to some pretty dopey sports events, hundreds of thousands of deeply traumatized children, and endless litigation.
This new law is institutionalized child abuse.
The minimum wage in CA is also rising, which will create more unemployment and higher costs for services. These costs which will be passed on directly to the consumer. In short, the income inequality Democrats kvetch about is caused by government.
A raft of new anti-gun laws go into effect here in California. Liberals will not rest until the Second Amendment is neutered thorough endless regulations.
“The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it.”
—Thomas Jefferson
Make no mistake about it, Democrats seek to centralize all power in government. And they will not stop until everything that belongs to you, is under their control.
“They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
—Benjamin Franklin
Of course, ObamaCare, continues to cruelly disrupt the lives of millions of Americans, and to shatter their financial security.
New York’s small-business owners, seniors and doctors are among the big losers as President Obama’s prescription for health-insurance reform takes effect.
The National Federation of Independent Businesses, an organization that represents nearly 11,000 entrepreneurs across the state, says it has yet to find a single member whose health-care costs are going down under the ObamaCare program, whose plans took effect New Year’s Day.
Meanwhile, an “overwhelming majority” of businesses canvassed by the group has reported increases in their insurance premiums, said Mike Durant, the NFIB’s New York director.
Michael Kennedy, who runs two family-owned dog-grooming salons near Albany, said changes to his cut-rate insurance coverage mandated by ObamaCare had more than doubled the cost, from $132.99 to $325.92 a month per person.
And when he checked the cost of buying an ObamaCare policy instead, it was “basically the same price, or even more,” he said.
Kennedy, 46, said that he and his wife clear only about $60,000 a year from their Pink Dog Parlor and Resort business, and that paying the new, higher premiums will be “a huge challenge.”
“It’s like another 100 dogs we need to groom,” he said.

Robert – you don’t need to answer this, but should you reach a point where you don’t need to be in Los Angeles to work (I know – no one retires in your business,) where would you go? Back to NY? Texas? Is there some place that’s struck you as at least tolerably sane/livable in the continental United States, where you won’t feel like every cent of your taxes isn’t being pressed into the service of policies you hate, by people you don’t trust? I’d open this up to anyone else here as well – as a Canadian, I’m curious.
And you, Rick?
S
Should explain. I am a dual citizen. Could go anywhere, but while I find Canada flawed, not like the U.S. at this time. I expect consistency, so that once the rules are in place, whether or not I agree, and since they are never to my taste, at least keep it going.
Right now, Barry, as long as Canada has a (relatively) conservative federal government, I’m willing to tough it out. Even then, the natural tendency to crowd to the middle and favour the status quo makes Canada tolerable, if far from perfect. What I’m seeing in the U.S. right now is a lurch to the left that I would have had a hard time predicting five or especially ten years ago. Obama’s first term was what I expected, but his reelection stunned me, and made me worry that there actually was a palpable near-majority of voting Americans who wanted his policies, and intended to get them. Canadians might dully respect the leaden version of social democracy they were sold in the years after the war, but America’s sudden willingness to change itself beyond recognition frightens me. Much as I love the country and its people, what I’m seeing there now – especially in cities I’ve always favoured, like Chicago and New York – makes the idea of living there anxiety-inducing. Sticking with the devil I know seems like the most prudent course.
Well said and pretty much the way my thoughts are running. There is a comfort zone here and the harper government is, more-or-less satisfactory.
Rick:
Jerusalem.
The way things are going in the Middle East lately, that would be like moving from the skirmishing grounds to the ramparts; a very brave move.
Robert, Robert, Robert:
Obama said premiums would decline by $2,500 per family. Obama is our president, the leader of the free world (I shudder just typing that sentence).
Anyway, Obama hasn’t lied since 2008 the last year the last 6 months the last 30 days the last week the last 24 hours the last 60 minutes the last minute the last 2 seconds (I think).
Wouldn’t we all want our president to go 2 seconds without telling a lie? I mean, Obama is the greatest pres….. Oh, forget it. We are all racist for not kissing his ring everyday. We are all Emmanuel Goldstein and will be subject to today’s Two Minute Hate.
I’m waiting for some teenaged boy to claim he is actually a lesbian female. You’d hope it’d make a few heads explode.
STW:
The only things that make liberal heads explode are traditional marriage, and the belief that men and women are different.
Sometimes I am slow. This transgender legislation goes to serious and powerful input from the non-elected. Example: The son of Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, Stephen, began life as their daughter. I’ve no problem with him, but he was in the of influencing passage. That means his parents.
This is somewhat personal, but not really. Being in Montreal the past few years I have seriously been thinking of relocation. First choice, a Toronto return. Every so often I put an American destination on my list. Florida, Texas. California. California scares me. I suppose the electorate rather than the political elite is responsible — but either way. The place, and I do mean the entire state, is a no go. Too bad. Sidebar. on/or about March 26th the plan is to spend an evening or two in San Francisco having dinner at Café Claude, located at 7 Claude Lane. For sentimental reasons this seemed like fun, and if I should relate to the town — I could look around. That still might be on the table, but the potential for disaster way too high.
Barry,
You could do a lot worse than Texas. It’s nothing like it’s portrayed in the media. Why I believe Robert went to Dallas and lived to tell the tale. Where ever or whatever you decide, good luck.
I think you have something there. Had Fort Worth in mind. But, there are hands to be played everywhere. Thanks for your thoughts and good wishes.
Your welcome. Feel free to ask about down here, glad to give any info.
Dallas is wonderful!
