Friday night begins the holiday of Passover in which Jews celebrate deliverance from Egyptian bondage.
In order to escape the shackles of slavery, the vast machinery of the mighty Egyptian state had to be crushed. Those who wielded absolute power were reduced to nothingness. G-d did this not only to diminish the physical power of a pitiless slave state, but to begin the process of making free the minds of the Israelites.
Slavery is an insidious institution, not only because it shackles the body, but creates a mentality where the slave identifies with his master to such a degree that he becomes complicit in his own bondage. He loves his master and cannot imagine a world absent an overlord.
As Daenerys Targaryn (Emilia Clarke) observes (via screenwriters) in Game of Thrones, “The slave learns to love his shackles.”
Of course, the generation that escaped Egypt died in the desert. Only their children who were permitted to enter the land of Israel.
Why?
Because the generation that witnessed G-d’s mighty miracles were never able to free their minds from bondage. And G-d deemed such people unfit, and unable to establish a national homeland.
Slavery warps the mind. Freedom, the slave comes to believe, is fraught with peril. Free choice appears like a black hole. Better to work, get fed, have a place to sleep, secure in the certainty of tomorrow, rather than face the bewildering choices that confront a free man in a civil society.
Sol, one of my closest friends here in Los Angeles, is a Holocaust survivor. Over 80 members of his family were murdered by the Nazis, including his mother and his baby sister. Sol has told me, in exhaustive detail, about his years in Auschwitz, Dachau, Buchenwald. I’ve heard sickening stories of ghettos, gas chambers, torture, mass shootings, death marches, starvation, and disease — an endless catalog of human evil and depravity.
But the one topic Sol cannot talk about are the Jewish overseers: the Judenrat, and the Kapos, Jews who collaborated with the Nazis. Of these men and women, Sol just shakes his head in disbelief. The evil of the Nazis is comprehensible for evil is ever present. But the Jews who cooperated in the genocide of their own people is beyond imagination.
The Judenrat and kapos are still with us.
Too many American Jews worship at the altar of the state. Their religion is not Torah Judaism but the Democrat Socialist party. So closely do they identify with the power of government they don’t even realize that they are creating the apparatus of a government that will enslave their children and their children’s children.
The right to bear arms, the Second Amendment, is not there to protect the rights of hunters or sports shooters. It is there to protect the people from the state. The founders understood that power corrupts, and those who wield power seek a monopoly on weapons. That’s why every fascist in history has passed laws that limit the availability of weapons to those who support the power of the state.
The secular Jews in the Democrat Socialist party who claim that the Second Amendment should be nullified are postmodern Kapos. They are the slaves in Plato’s cave who cannot imagine a world where shackles do not exist. They are American/Europeans who yearn for civilizational suicide because they no longer have any faith or are completely ignorant of the glories of Western Civilization.
(Here’s the story of yours truly, trapped in the ’92 L.A. riots, Jew Without a Gun.)
Obamacare is Egyptian slavery. It is Pharaoh’s court of magicians; charlatans who create an illusion of reality.
The American government increasingly burdens citizens with regulations. One regulation inevitably gives birth to a dozen more. The entire lunacy about the weather (global cooling/global warming/climate change) is a way for government to control every aspect of your life. If you dare question the false science that is the scaffolding of this hysteria you are labeled a climate denier, an attempt to equate healthy skepticism with Holocaust denial. Soon, those who state the obvious — that science is never settled — will be sued by government agencies and their proxies, and sentenced to reeducation camps.
Indeed, as George Orwell wrote in his novel 1984, a user’s manual for the Democrat Socialist party, “Slavery is freedom.”
Seraphic Secret will celebrate Passover. We will chant: “Once we were slaves in Egypt, and now we are free.” And we will hope that our grandchildren will overcome the soft tyranny which is gathering across the American landscape.
Thank you Robert, that was a powerful discussion of the subject.
A particularly good treatment of the evils of slavery in a novel is Robert Heinlein’s “Citizen of the Galaxy”.
Amen.
A Kasher Sameach to you and all of yours.
