In March 2011, Vogue magazine ran a gushing profile of Syria’s totalitarian first couple Asma Assad and her husband Bashar al-Assad. Syria, we noted, is a military dictatorship that routinely tortures and murders its own citizens. It is also an openly Jew-hating state that has vowed on numerous occasions to annihilate Israel. For Joan Juliet Buck to write such a flattering profile of a butcher and his accomplice wife was almost surrealistic, a Brooksian “Springtime for Hitler.”
As Syria descended into civil war and Assad openly murdered scores of his own people Vogue magazine quietly scrubbed the article from its website.
Seraphic Secret saved and reprinted the article because we knew that sooner or later events would catch up with Vogue. We wanted to make sure the story did not get flushed down the memory hole like so much Communist propaganda.
Yesterday, the New York Times ran a lengthy article about the favorable PR enjoyed in the west by the Assads. The story focuses on Barbara Walters, Joan Juliet Buck and Anna Wintour and their enabling of this murderous regime.
