
He is the Satchmo of the shofar.
When my friend G. puts his lips to the narrow end of a shofar, and lets loose with the traditional sequence of blasts—Tekiah, Shevarim, Teruah—the notes slice the air, hang and vibrate, then penetrate skin and bone—to the very soul. Those fortunate enough to hear G. blow the shofar, are awakened from their spiritual slumber; their commitment to repentance is strengthened.
Besides blowing the best shofar yours truly has ever heard, G. also collects figurines of shofar blowers. A few weeks ago, G. was kind enough to give me a tour of his amazing collection.
