A few years ago, I was approached by an independent producer who wanted to hire me to write a script. In truth, the producer was an amateur, someone with no credits. But he had lots of enthusiasm and claimed to have money in place to develop a script. I sat down for lunch with the producer to discuss the project. I felt a strong affinity with the subject matter and the producer seemed to be an okay guy, or at least, well-intentioned.
I instructed my agent to proceed with negotiations.
A few days later my agent reported on dismal opening rounds. It was clear to me and to my agent that this producer and his lawyer had no idea what they were doing. In fact, they were comically incompetent.
