Hollywood was once the dream capital of the world. Movies peddled glamour and fantasy. This was La-La Land where outrageous plots and larger than life characters allowed audiences to construct alternate realities — entertainment.
But La-La Land has relocated.
On Wednesday, President Obama delivered the commencement address at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. The mission of the Coast Guard is to protect America’s coasts. But according to this Commander-in-Chief the real threat to America comes not from enemies attacking the homeland, but from so-called global freezing/global warming/climate change — whatever they’re calling the weather this week.
Wandering around my beautiful neighborhood recently, I’ve noticed lots of blue.
Always on the lookout for compelling Friday Photos, I decided that blue would be a fun theme. And then, once I made that decision, all I saw was blue: blue cars, blue buildings — you name it, it’s blue. I suppose the same thing would happen if I decided on green, red or — I dunno — pink?
Hypothetical question: Your house is on fire. Everyone is safe. You can run in and rescue one item. What will it be?
The answer, overwhelmingly, is family photos.
We are the sum of our memories. Photos help us capture time and space, preserve moments that otherwise would be lost. I seek the ordinary, the flat reality which is otherwise invisible.
