Shirley Temple Black passed away yesterday. She was 85. At the height of her career in the 1930s, she was the most popular actress in Hollywood with more drawing power than Clark Gable and Greta Garbo combined.
As a child star during the Depression, the little girl with the 56 perfect corkscrew curls projected determination and optimism to a dispirited nation. In many of her movies, she was a feisty orphan who taught men how to be better men. When her career ended, she was but 22 years old. As for the millions she earned, her father squandered everything. Rather than retreat, like so many stars, into a shell of bitter nostalgia, Shirley Temple moved ahead and forged a new life for herself and her family. She was a great actress and American, a prominent conservative Republican, and a thoroughly decent woman.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. ”
“The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly — it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over.”
—Joseph Goebbels
Blaming President George W. Bush for America’s economic nightmare was President Obama’s calling card his first year in office. I was a little shocked because real leaders, mature men, understand that the buck stops here, not back there.
When Obama’s second year rolled around and Bush was still front and center in Obama’s talking points I marveled at the sheer chutzpah. A normal politician would have his surrogates perpetuate this meme but himself keep away because it’s mean and petty and, let’s face it, vulgar demagoguery. But Obama is no ordinary politician. Obama is an Alinsky predator whose first impulse is to isolate, demonize and destroy the opposition.
