The Solace of Baseball

The baseball field is a study in fearful symmetry. Absent players, the field can be read as an abstract work of art. There are the green and brown fields of color bisected by sharp white lines and three small white squares. The gently sloping mound faces home plate creating a uniquely American geography.

Jewish holidays do not simply recall the past. Jewish holidays are cautionary tales for all time. They remind us that Jewish history repeats itself with terrible constancy. The Jewish people introduced ethical monotheism to the world — and for this gift the world has never forgiven us. Thus, we are despised and demonized.
